I have the opportunity to buy an 06' head with 45K miles for $400 bucks.

Do the newer heads flow well enough to justify the hassle of putting them on an older 24 valve like mine?

How much more should I be willing to pay to get the common rail and injector lines....

Is $400 too much money for a used head? The stock 06' that it came from melted #6 piston. It was still running when it was driven into the shop, just had a little bit of piston slap/knock that the owner wanted investigated. I checked the valve seats and not aluminum under the valves, just a little bit of surface buildup of aluminum/soot mixed.

if there's no cracks then its a good buy, just don't know how hard it is to make a common rail head work on a 24V

You're gonna need a bunch more parts than a rail & injector lines to turn it into a 610 motor!

All you need is common rail cross over tubes machined to fit vp44 injector lines and open one water passage up a little and it's a direct bolt on. O and you have to relocate the map sensor and the air temp sensor.

You won't have any trouble unloading it on someone who wants a good core to use for cylinder head mods so their DD isn't down for more than a few days - go to the trouble to disassemble, tank & flux it so you know it's a solid core and it'll sell even easier.

New reman CR heads from Cummins are $14XX.00 last time I checked (they come assembled ready to install).

My buddy James here on CompD (hjpcummins) just Jacked his head up and needs one!!!!

PM him.......Or me...I'll give ya his number!!!

You can get the crossover tubes from EEP or Monster Pump Mike. Drill and tap the intake to get the sensors to work. it's a 14 mm straight thread I believe. You also have to massage a water jacket iirc.

Well,
I bought the head. I can't tell if the build up is just soot or if there is a little melted aluminum that made it to the head on cyl #6. See attached picture, what do you all think?

That looks like it's from the melted piston....Mine looked similar but not quite that bad......

It should clean up just fine......I hope....
