I figured that is what you were going to say about the band failure.
The only disadvantage I am aware of with a rigid band is that finding them sometimes sucks. I think PATC and a few other places list them, but you would have to call them to see if they actually have them in stock.
My buddy and I have pulled most of the ones we have used in our race trannys out of core trannys that we have floating around.
