I finally got my 96 12 valve out on the road today and it ran real good for about 20 mins lots of power, then it started sputtering and blowing white smoke. Could this be the head gasket already, the cooolant and oil level look good.

I have II dragon fly pump, injectors, street twins, with o-ringed head and arp studs.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks I will check the timing. Its the first time I drove the truck since I built it and it only lasted 20 mins. I think its making some good power it spun the tires for almost a block. The first drag races are may 9th here and I need the bugs worked out of it

I put a key in my pump shaft so I no longer worry about timing slipping. Along with a adjustable timing gear.

I checked the timing and it is out when the motor is pinned the pin on the pump is not lined up. When I did the motor I put a new nut and washer on and torqued it, is there somthing else I could do or should I get an adjustable gear with a key way.

Make sure the inside of the gear and the shaft are super clean, and retorque. My first try at setting my buddies 96 took 3 attempts to get it to stick. Each time it would slip back. Just kept cleaning and cleaning, finally got it clean enough the 3rd attempt and it's held since. That was probably 50k miles ago now.

I thought we got it clean enough each time, but the 3rd time we went over it twice more to make sure. When you think it's good and clean, go back over it and do it again. The extra little bit of work saves a lot of aggravation.

i would brake clean it all and use green locktite on the threads

its not really unremoveable - a propane torch will break that stuff right down

Green locktite probably wouldn't make a ton of difference. Its not a matter of the nut backing off, its a matter of the gear slipping on the pump shaft from the surfaces not being perfectly clean & oil-free.

I put an adjustable gear on my puller with a key way to ensure no chance of the timing slipping.

Should I advance the timing at all when I put it together or just put it back the way it was with both the motor and pump pined?
Has anyone tried to warm the gear with a propane torch when puting it on or is this a bad idea.

:umno::badidea:

Unless you want to cuss it , green loctite it and it will be on forever.

As mentioned before clean really well with brake cleaner and torq nut to 145lbs. Use a new loc washer too.

take it you are not accustomed to using heat to remove fasteners?

green red what ever the stuff dont like heat

i am not talkin lots of heat (like from an oxy acetylene torch)

just a good ole tweaker torch works just fine

i use one of the three thread lockers on just about everything and my stuff is pretty dependable

get all three at your local honda motorcycle dealer for the price of just the blue

and they come in a better bottle with a better spout - you can actually despense one drop at a time

good luck with it

What ever floats your boat. Won't see me throwing a torch on a customers ride in that fashion . You have to think about the what if factor. What if the customer want to change the timing or reset it at a later date .

Thanks don't need the angry customer .

I used electronic cleaner because it doesn't leave the film that I have found in some brake cleaners.

you can also use spit n toilet paper

not to only to clean it but to hold it together

ya know, if you want it to come apart easy

lol

Use contact cleaner (No-Flash from LPS FTW!), give the gear a tap onto the shaft when you set it with a dead blow hammer, and I have torqued mine to 180 ft-lbs.

X2

I cleaned mine really really well then applied the green loctite to the shaft/gear slid it on and torqued to 175 ft/ lb

Ive heard of people going up to 200ftlb
