12v Electric Fans?

For the people that have built their own electric fan systems on a Cummins (specifically 12v) what size, type and CFM electric fans did you use? I daily drive my truck and only tow light loads <5,000lbs occasionally so would an electric fan setup be benifitial to me?

If you made your own kit then how did you wire it? Did you just hook it to a toggle switch or is it hooked up in a way that once a certain coolant temp is reached they automatically kick on?

I am slowly getting the parts for my engine rebuild together and figured that while the radiator is completely out of the truck now would be the time to start fabricating a new fan shroud to use with electric fans.

Thanks for any help!

i went to ebay and bought the biggest dual fan set up i could find for my chevy and it was claimed to flow 3600 cfm a piece and it came with a temp control switch and relay to wire it in you just set the controller to the temp range and supply the power i would hook an inline fuse to like a little dash light so you know when you lose power to the fans.

here is the link to the company that makes the fans i use if you would like more info

I just went to auto-zone and advanced auto and bought two 15 inch fans from flexalite. These were on the shelf but only one at each store. This was what the fexalite book listed for a cummins other than the fancy shrouded set. The factory wiring is a joke. I wired them up on a snoplow selanoid rated at 50 amps. They pull almost 40 amps. They worked great on my dually except for the auto funcion with the temp sensor. I never could get them to come on. Thats why i swithed to the selanoid and just had a toggle to trun them on when i needed them which was only if i was running a/c in town or towing through slowmoving stop and go traffic. They cooled even towing 20k with a 2.8 single charger. I posted pics in another thread for getblown 5.9 but here is one for you.

I have LS1 fans on my truck. They do ok. I don't tow to notice what help they would be there but I run the piss outa my truck up the mountains and it only goes a lil over 190. I only have them on a switch right now til I get a relay. they are wired seperate so you could have one run soon as you turn the key then the other kick in as temp rises.

I run a dual GM setup on relays and a toggle switch, as it rarely ever gets hot enough to use them

It looks like ~40amps is a sweet spot for keeping these things cool while towing. Mine from a Ford taurus pulled 38amps and kept ~20k# cool without ac.

Also in the link that Chevycummins posted that Co. has an "Extreme" Fan Kit that flows 7000CFM!! for $350

The flexalite claims 5500CFM for $550ish

By the time i get to the end of the track the coolent is pretty damm hot,I am still running a factory fan and an electric water pump.
I want to see how much will change when i go with electric fans then if that doesnt change my temps much at the end of the track then im going back to the factory water pump....I am running a coolent bypass

Anyone else got any ideas on fans :poke:

I'm running the factory water pump and factory fan and my temps will climb a solid 10-15* when I run my truck hard. Fresh coolant, new t-stat, and clean radiator.

I am running the derale 16934 and love them!! Bought them through JEGS. I also have JEGS electric water pump. When i bought mine JEGS was the cheapest place around...

What are your coolent temps at the end of the track?

After a really hard pull on a clay track i only see about 170 degree water temp. I run with no thermostat.

Before i got the e fans and e water pump i was pegging my water temp guage at the end of the track!!

I was surprised how nice they work. I have mine direct wired so i can turn the truck off and let them on.

I bet if you use a shroud around the fan(s) you can use lower CFM fans cause its pulling more air through the rad efficiently.

What do all of you guys do with the winshiels washer bottle and overflow tank?
Thats if you guys are even running them.
I've been wanting to get a set of electric fans for awhile now, the only thing stopping me was Flex-a-lites price tag and the fact the shroud holds all the bottles on.
I guess I could fab up a Stainless fan shroud.

I dont have either on my truck.. I am goin to fab up a home made thing for the overflow someitme..
