12V Engine Stand mount on side of block?

Man, those engine stands look a little weak to hold a fully loaded engine. I need one so I can open up my engine and tinker on it. But I dont have the $$$ for a good stand. But I have some 6x6x1/4 I beam and a old dana 60. As far as wheels for it, I am thinking about using a set of cj5 axles with some low profile tires. The only part that I'll hafta buy is some gears and chain for a gear reduction. If I break this stand, then I am working on way too big of a engine.

That looks good except the weight of the engine will want to sit rear down.

I made mine offset so that the center of cylinders (front to back)was even with center. The vertical center of those 4 holes is about 1.5" lower than the upper most bolt on the engine.

It perfectly balances a shortblock. Need a pic?

Yea pics please.

Also do you guys find it better to mount in sideways or from the rear? Would think sideways would make it easiest to get to everything?

I think sideways is easier...
I went to a vocational school and they had probably 10 or so b-series that were all mounted on the side like that..maybe 3 or 4 real nice engine stands that would put the engine ANY way you want it up, down, sideways, on its side, on its other side, etc, etc (you get the point)

Real easy to make adapter plate too just 1/4in or 3/8 plate (or watever) drill 4 holes in a rectangular fashion do a little more welding and your in!

TORCH YOUR WAY IN WELD YOUR WAY OUT!

is dont know if anyone has said this but take the motor mount off and use it for a template to mark the holes on the square plate fomr your stand and u will just drill 1 or 2 holes i cant remember just off center of the slots should work awesome.

I like it Wayne...I am gonna build something like that, and was planning on using sprockets and chain for reduction as well...since I have plenty of that stuff laying around here:D

Good idea on using the old axle for an axle:hehe: Never thought of that.

Thanks Chris. I might have time to work on it in a week or 3 and I'll have some good pics for ya.

Here is how I modified my cheap folding 2,000lb capacity stand so it will work well with a heavy engine. I used a 30:1 or 50:1 (can't remember which) worm drive gear box from www.surpluscenter.com and used sprockets and #60 roller chain to drive a 2" solid shaft which rides in a pair of pillow block bearings to bolt the engine too. This engine is an IH DT-414 which is several hundred pounds heavier than the 5.9 and even when it was fully built I could turn it over in the stand with almost no effort at all.
