12v fuel questions, fire out the stack

Here's a short run down of what I have. Ported head, 5X.016 injectors, 215 pump with 0 plate full forward and modded AFC. The pump is dual feed, regulated to 45 psi with 5k GSK and full cut dv's. Stock compression and pistons with the biggest cam I could stuff in it without cutting the pistons.

Timing is only at 18*. Will advancing it help or hurt?

The last two pulls I've had fire out the stack. Is it safe to remove the plate? Will this give me enough fuel to make a difference? Is the pump capable of delivering enough fuel for larger injectors?

I don't want to have a major melt down.

ever thought of some water injection??, will help with your egt's, and keep the inside of your engine spotless.

I'm no 12v guy Kevin, but I've read that removing the plate will cause the rack to stick over time. I have talked to quite a few 12v guys & they usually say their timing is somewhere around 27* or more. I've never heard of a puller running less than 20*. Just repeating what I've heard

I've been told the same. Thinking if I advance the timing it may be worse.

add timing!!!!

Mine did the same thing early this year when my timing was around the same place, alot of the fuel is burning late and still burning as it heads out the exhaust...

Adding timing reduced the flame for me, but it still ran hot EGTs. Now with my water working, it's only 1300 degrees roughly.

Kevin did you see that listie and smithon allow water in hot street??

8. Fuel nothing allowed other than #2 fuel only and water/meth

LOL I intended this build to be 2.6 but I think I got a little carried away. I got all the buttons From Scheid to adjust the pump. I'll try that and connect the water for Smithton and see how it does.

Will advancing the timing make it easier to get under the charger at the end of the track or not?

Advancing the timing will kill the flame. Dont feel bad, even in my truck with stock injectors, I can glow a good 6-8" flame out the stack at night.

I would jump to at least 25* and go from there with it. Teddy Bear's truck had a flame at 20*. We advanced it to 25* and EGT's were slightly better, and no flame.

As for staying on top of the charger, It may make it easier to fall off the charger at the end, but I dont think it will be a big problem at all around 25*.

Best thing to do is try it and see what you think of it. I bet you will like it much better advanced to 25* or so.

Eric

usually more timing will make you fall off it easier, however not enough timing will also keep you from maintaining rpms to stay on it once loaded.

I bumped it 10 degrees, night and day difference. I think I've gone another 8 since then.

Thanks for all the help. I'm still learning with these Cummins.

More timing will start injection sooner therefore giving the motor more time to burn the fuel during each power stroke. Like others have stated, a flame out the stack is late fuel burning when it gets a little atmospheric oxygen just outside the stack.

Most classes don't allow it.

ahh, shows how much i know about pulling. I guess the only thing you can do is advance the timing to about 25 or so. earlier burn in the cylinder, should stop the flame.

What are you running for a supply pump? I had a flame until I put a fass pump on the truck. Also for what its worth Ive been plateless for almost 5 years now with the truck being a dd.

It's a Fuelab pump. Pressure never drops below 45. I'm going to pull the plate and get the timing up. I'll see what it does Friday night.
