anyone familiar with 1996 12V wiring? looking for a 'key on' source or wire i could tap that doesn't get shut down when the key is turned to START, but goes on & off with the key

Check the fuel heater. I know my '98's fuel heater is hot in the run and start position, your '96 might be the same. If you can get a wiring schematic, it should be easy to find. I tapped into the trigger wire for the fuel heater relay, not the actual power wire from the relay.

thanks, ill look into that

Black wire with a yellow stripe under dash. There is a blue wire going up the steering column That you can use also. Make sure to relay your component if it pulls a decent amount of amps. Always go to battery for your main power source if you decide to run a relay.
