I dont know how much of this is true.....But this is the story behind Zmax raceway i have heard. Bruton Smith (the owner of the complex, and most known for his ownership of Nascar tracks, including Lowe's Motor Speedway that is on the same site as Zmax) went to the Concord city councel....or planning commission....or whoever he needed to in order to get approval to add the dragstrip to his complex. He told them about his four wide idea and wanting to add a dragstrip to the complex and they told him no way. They flat out shut him down and wanted no part in allowing him to do it.....

He then secured the rights to purchase land in some other city in the Charlotte area.....got the ball rolling on the planning process of building a whole new facility (nascar, dirt track, dragstrip....All of it). I dont know how far that planning got, but he then took all of that back to the city of Concord and told them that they had two options. They could let him build the dragstrip, or he was going to level the whole facility, sell the land, and build a whole new facility WITH a dragstrip in the other city. Needless to say since the heart of concord (bass pro, hotels, etc) is all built around the motorplex, they buckled.

Again....I dont know how much of this is true....But its an interesting story.

The below is direct from Wikepedia.....

zMAX Dragway
zMAX Dragway

The zMAX Dragway is a state-of-the-art four-lane drag strip, located on 125 acres (51 ha) of CMS property across U.S. Highway 29 from the main superspeedway. It was built in 2008 involving a total of 1,876 workers and a combined 636,000 man hours. With 300 workers on site daily working an average 11 hour shift, a 13-month construction project turned into a six-month one. At one point during construction, concern by nearby residents led Concord city council to rezone land the drag strip was being built on, preventing it from being built. Following the decision Smith threatened to close Charlotte Motor Speedway and build a track elsewhere in Metrolina.[9][10] When asked if he would go through with the threat Smith replied "I am deadly serious".[10] After a month of negotiations, the issue was settled and instead of the speedway closing, Smith announced $200 million worth of improvements including road and highway improvements, as well as noise attenuation for the drag strip.[9] The drag strip officially opened on August 20, 2008, and a public open house was held a few days later. The first NHRA event was held September 11–14, 2008.[11]

The dragway features the only all-concrete, four-lane drag strip in the United States. The starting line tower is 34,000 square feet (3,200 m2) and includes 16 luxury suites, race control areas and a press box. Two grandstands, one on their side of the strip, can hold a combined 30,000 spectators. Twenty-four luxury suits with hospitality accommodations are located above the main grandstand. Two tunnels run underneath the strip to enhance fan mobility between the two grandstands

About 80% of that is true. Bruton has a HUGE influence in our area. What Bruton says Bruton gets! He is moving a road right now next to the motorspeedway so his people don't have to cross a main road to get to the speedway...in fear of padestrian accidents I guess.

As far as I know when he built the new dragstrip concord was suposed to cut him a fat check as some sort of incentive. They were late on paying so he sued!
