2nd Gen Steering Boxes,Any Idea's?

Where is the preload screw? Do yall run it all the way in?
My truck wonders pretty bad with 140,000 miles on it and i don't have the money to convert it to a third gen box. Looks like this a pretty common problem.

Is the preload screw the main cause of second gen steer problems? Or, is it poor built gear boxes.
Does the frame brace help any?[from BD]

The frame brace is one of the best mods I've done. Yeah, the preload is the biggest adjustment you will notice.

The steering box support is the best thing I have done to my front end. It got rid of all my play.I would buy one if they where $500 knowing how well they work.

Go here. they make a custom box for our truck with fast ratio gear.

Or go here and buy a bracket (adapter plate) for installing a 3rd gen box.

Welcome to Howard's Allison Conversions

good luck

That is the cast plate that Howard and I are working out.

I finally got the position of the gear on the frame correct to allow clearance between steer ahead collar and the engine cross member, and also the pit man arm to sway bar clearance.

We are going to have the plate CMM'd and hopefully in the next few weeks get these things going.

I had looked at your thread about that set-up.I am concerned about welding anything onto a steering shaft that is turning a set of oversized tires and had a big lift like her truck has.I bookmarked the thread to keep an eye on it to see how you work out the steering shaft deal as I have not ruled this out for later.........Andy

I should have said try a box stabilizer, I put a new box in mine and it had alot of play and it is all gone now.

Andy, good luck with your steering box search. Do you have any pictures of your girl's truck? I know a camera ***** like you always takes lots of pictures. ;)
How long does a factory 2nd gen box last, or are they sloppy from the get go? I imagine a lift and big tires compounds the issues?

The last 6 boxes I've run are sloppy right out of the box. This one is getting pretty bad. Mine change it out while I'm doing the p-pump since I'll have the front end off and it'll be easier.

I vote for the stabalizer bar(DSS). I also like the rock solid bushing for the steering column. My truck steers like a chev after I put the bushing in.

Got the DSS, rock ram bushing, thuren's x-over steering, thurens track bar, steering box is still sloppier than a $2 date.

I was too, as I only run stock meats.

I am talking with Borgeson about supplying only the end. You will only have to cut the stock end off and put the new end on the solid square shaft. It will fasten with two set allen screws with lock nuts.

Similar to this.

Also, the stock 3rd gen end is welded to the shaft.
