3.0 Final Drive Ratio

all I can comment on i what ive seen back home from our truck as well as friends like andrew (sauer implemnet), terry coppess the mosley boys, george peterson, ect...

with the 37 spline axles installed the ring and pinion seems to give up first.
the general consensus is that the ring gear is walking away from the pinion as the case flexes and the teeth end up shallower and then sheer off. what needs to be made is a real deal girdle that may make the 80 an option in a 1000+ hp 2.8 or 3.0 puller.

tire also has alot to do with it 265 duals and your safe 285's pushing it 305s or 315s and youve entered by by axle territory

also set up your gears with minimal to no back lash. on the street it would cause heat issues but I set up matts with no backlash and the pinion as deep as it would go and luckly we've yet to loose a set. but earlier in the season and at scheid we were running 265's we have now moved to 285s and only made a couple passes on them at then end of the season so well see what next year holds.

A softer gear may also be better like a pro gear for a 9inch for a competition application if one was available

Yes set up the gear for zero backlash. My new one is a little hard to turn. I figure I will run it a little, then change the fluid. Pulling shouldn't get it hot enough to take the heat treat out of it.

One guy in our open stock gas class ran a Dana 80 center with rockwell tubes mounted to it. Don't know exactly how he did it, never looked that close, but it seemed to work good.

Well i've got a source for a girdle to take care of the ring and pinion. I thought 5.29 were the lowest gear ratio for a rockwell.

When you say 37 spline axles, are ya guys talkn dana axles or aftermarket ones??? cause im building an 80 with f-450 37 spline axles in it and wondering how strong it will be when im done!?!?

the 37 spline 450 axle while probably not as strong as an axle with both ends splined and a driver plate is still pretty stout.

kta put one in george petersons truck years ago and to my knowledge has never broken an axle although I think they have tweaked one. and theyve torn out the ring and pinion so I would say its less of a weak link than the R&P
