3-53 Detroit rack timing

All are 2 stroke, all have blowers. Turbo charged models still have the blower and are considered forced induction. Non turbo models are naturally aspirated. never heard of one being called a 4 stroke due to a turbo.

Jimbo and Roachie are correct. The GM built detroits all had blowers. Once MTU bought them off GM is when they started a 4 stroke version ie the current versions in OTR trucks. The old 2 stroke super/turboed ones would make as high as 45 psi air box pressure under load.

Do they not inject fuel or "fire" each time the piston approaches TDC? Thus, being a 2-stroke? The scavenging due to the pressurized airbox is actually what helps push the exhaust gases out as well. And aren't all Detroits equipped with the roots-type blowers?

Am I completely off-track? That's what little about Detroits that I can recall from my diesel tech. classes. Go easy on me as I'm 11 hours into a 12hr. nightshift right now.

it was end of a 20h day for me... ment naturally aspirated not 4 stroke with blower
