Was going over Randy's ring & pinion website pricing some stuff....I'm going back and forth between 4.88 & 5.13 in my head. I really don't need to spin 5000 RPM's to win the small local circuit I run with, and I saw it eventually lead to early demise of a local 3.0 trucks motor last year (Newsome's Nusance).

Well as I was pricing all the bits and pieces turns out Dana 80 4.88's are $600+ from Randys!:what::kick: D60 4.88's are only $300. Front and rear 5.13's for D60/80's are $300 a set so what gives?

Can 4.88's be had at a reasonable price anywhere?

How soon are you needing a set? I have a set I installed, and the axle has sat. I haven't ran them. They are expensive though.

This will be a winter project, so its no rush that's why I'm just pricing things now. I broke my rear yoke last night at my local pull so that needs to be fixed, and I'm trying to get a bigger set of injectors before the end of the season as well.

I have a complete axle with 37 spline axles, welded carrier, and 4.88 gears brand new sitting next to the shop. I would give you a good deal on it! It is a srw axle.

Partial trade for a 11.5" Dodge AAM with 4:10s?

The 5.13 would work, but with a stock cam and still only a 2.6 charger I don't think it his RPMs would be high enough to get the wheel speed up as much as the 4.88's. I just now figured up the final ratio's and for him to have the same wheel speed with the 4.88's, he would need to make 300-400RPM more going down the track to make up the difference. Also with the majority of our pull using Corbins sled, more speed is the key. We are using the Motive 4.88's in lynn's truck now and have had no problems with them. I think with that low of a gear, the ring and pinion isn't going to be a problem at all. The axles will fail more times than the rest of the drivetrain with that low of a gear in a 2.6 class.

ACTUALLY THE LOWER THE RATIO THE WEAKER THE RING & PINION IS AND MORE LIKELY TO BREAK.

Could you elaborate a little? Thank you

The pinion gets smaller with the higher numerical gear ratios. So in could be weaker, but you have to remember that your taking less of a bite with the lower gears, and your also gonna be spinning more RPM, so your torque demand will be less.

I have seen guys with 3.54 gears in the rear fight rear end issues and when they went to lower gears the rear end issues went away.

LIKE Z STATED THE PINION GETS SMALLER AS THE NUMERICAL GEAR RATIOS GO UP. THUS GIVING YOU LESS RING & PINION TOOTH CONTACT (FOR EXAMPLE W/ 3.73'S YOU MIGHT HAVE CONSTANT PRESSURE BEING APPLIED ON 2 TEETH AND W/ 5.13'S YOU MIGHT HAVE CONTACT ON ONLY 1 1/4 TEETH) THE LOWER GEARS DOES SPEED THINGS UP AND LOWERS THE TORQ. BEING APPLIED TO THE DRIVETRAIN BUT IT STOPS @ THE PINION WHEN IT COMES IN CONTACT W/ THE RING GEAR THE REDUCTION SLOWS EVERYTHING DOWN AND BRINGS THE TORQ BACK UP. THIS IS WHY THE MAJORITY OF 5.13 R&P FAILURES BEGIN W/ THE RING GEAR TEETH CRACKING AND THEN BREAKING CLEAR OFF. THE 3.54 R&P FAILURES SEEM TO HAVE MORE PINION PROBLEMS. HOPE THIS HELPS PT

:stab: exactly!!!! thats why all mod trucks (diesel and alcohol) run 6.20, 6.80 and 7.20 instead of the 4.10 sets they could get for the big rears.:hehe::hehe:

im gonna stop now:hehe:
