i have a 2wd 2001 cc/sb SD with a 1996 12v in it.

i currently have a 47rh trans in it and i am getting ready to pull the motor for a rebuild. as far as the tranny i'm tired of flipping toggle switches for the TQ lock up and O/D so i want something that i can tune and just get in it and drive.

i had a built 4r100 behind the 7.3l that was in it and it was a good tranny but i would like to have that extra gear in the 5r100. i have read about the 5r100 and from what i gathered it is a stout trans but as far as tuning goes with the PCS stand alone, nobody has been able to tune it to get the full potential out of the trans.

now as far as an allison trans, i am a noob.

Keep in mind whatever trans i end up getting will be built.
so, my question is

what trans do you think would be more reliable?

sorry for the BOOK

Thanks,
Brad

i have decided i am not going with an allison.

So, it is between the 5r100 or 4r100?

Looking at some of these 6.4 guy the 5r110 will hold up to some pretty good abuse

that they will. i would go with the 5r100 if someone would confirm that somebody has gotten the tuning down to get the full potential out of it

The pcs will run a 5r110 but they are hard to get tuned right, the 4r100 is the most reliable granny for the money spent. Most people doing conversions are dumping the torqueshift for manuals or the 4r100

fordguy24- yea, 5r110 is in the 6.4's i am looking at 5r100 or 4r100 but it seems that the 4r100 is the best bet. allison is just over my budget

dzljon- thats what i keep hearing. i think i am going to go with the 4r100 from the looks of it. my luck right when i get it all put in and running somebody will have just got the 5r100 tuned right

thanks for y'alls responses

i have a 5r110 in mine. if i did it over i'd go with a built 4r100. the amount of time invested in tuning the 5r110 adds up quick. I've got it shifting pretty good now but it's definately not 100% yet.

What did the 5r100 come in? I thought they went from the 4r100 in the 7.3 to the 5r110 in the 6.0 and 6.4 ans then the 6r after that.

4r100- 7.3l. 5r110 - 6.0l/6.4l. 6r140 - 6.7l

The 5r is a stout transmission with a Ford PCM/TCM controlling but not so much with PCS. Stick with the 4r.

trans

I'm not too far from this point in my sd 12v with 47rh conversion . Getting the 47rh to lock up and shift without toggles has been a concern of mine lately also. I would like some info on this if possible. Thanks , Brad

Intermediate, direct, and over-drive are the exact same ratio between the 4r100 and 5r110.

4r100 and be done. Bean has been scrapping 5r110's for 4r100's in his conversions for years now. Just aren/t worth the headaches and hassles.

Goose- exactly, i am just gonna go with the 4r100. thanks

01quadcab- i have thought about it but i am so tired of messing with this 47rh. my top speed in overdrive is 75mph. i just want to put a built 4r100, tune and drive

ratrod111- here a few threads. hope they help

I'd use a 5 speed Allison with an Allison TCM and the OS from a bus/commercial vehicle. EFI-Live tunable! ;)

to tell you the truth i don't know. i have $1700 in it. i am in winter park FL 32789
