alright, so from my understanding, the oil cooler/oil filter assembly on the side of the block on our 6bt's has an integral bypass... im assuming this is to bypass the filter once there is enough restriction.....

does anyone know the specs on when this bypass should be opening ? how to check that it works and/or test it ?

and if you pulled the plug on the top of the filter housing beside the turbo oil feed, could u install a sending unit there to moniter the function of the by-pass? specifically for running long drain intervals with pure synthetics and just knowing "hey, my oil filter is getting plugged up".....

:pop:

I think its 55psi but don't quote me. I know from experence, this past year the pressure regulator and bypass was messed up which in turned caused extreme oil pressure (90psi) at 190* So if your not sure get a new one and all the parts that go with it. About $300 from cummins and it has been updated from the original. $.02

There are 2 different ones spacific to your motor... Dump to pump and dump to sump, be sure you get the correct one as some are not interchangable.

hmmmm, i noticed there are two different gaskets in my rebuild kit.... opening diferent passages inside the filter assembly.... im assuming this would change your dump location... would it not ?

there must be more specifics on ho a way to function test it yourself.....

come on guys

Are you having problems with the oilcooler.
There are two gaskets because one is for a 12v and the other is for a 24v.
And just to remind everyone the oilcoolers are diferent, For a 12v and a 24v
The filter housings are the same. If you have high oil pressure, like all the time just replace the filter housing, and all the stuff that goes on it.

as far as i can tell, everything is normal... i just want to make damn sure the by-pass works when it is supposed to....

and to ensure that it isnt by-passing all the time

So the plate that mounts the oil filter has the bypass in it and the 12 valve and 24 valve plates will not interchange? I was thinking about redoing one for my 12 valve to make a remote filter out of it so I better take one off the 12 valve block. Am I understanding right?

Yes. The filter housings are the same . Same part number 12 or 24v. The oil coolers are different. The look the same , but they are not. The 24v has one more hole at the bottom of it. If you held them both up beside each other you would see the difference.

Right on..... but what about the bypass....

I'm assuming its some type of sprung ball ? Under that cap just below the filter head in the side of the outer housing

Yes you are correct. When you start the motor it is by-passing because the oil is cold.
Oil pressure is very high, when it warms it drops down. thats what they do. Thats normal. So if it does that it's ok. If it stays high (like 80 psi) all the time then you have a problem.

Relief valve

Just to bring back up if anyone is looking for it
