can i use a 92 short block and swap all the stuff over from my 94 motor? what will not work right? what do i need to do to make it work?

Garrett

yes you can.minor details to pay attention too. the non i/c 89-early 91 have different pistons and cams but they will work too. they dont have as big of piston oil squirters,

ok, so how different is the 92 to a 94+ 12v? little different pistons? cam?

Garrett

anything else? im supposed to pick one up this coming weekend. anything i should plan for?

Garrett

The '92 has a similiar design to the '96-98, a better design than the '94-95.

Weston, I wasn't aware piston design was different, other than ring gap. Is there something else, or is this it?

92 will work great. all i/c 12v were very simular. non i/c had bigger differences as stated.

'92 piston: 54/62mm bowl
14mm crown/top ring
44cc's

'94 piston: 52/60mm bowl
8mm crown/top ring
45cc's

'96 piston: 52/61mm bowl
14mm crown/top ring
42cc's

The hat dimensions are also quite a bit different, ever wonder why the 370Marine injector has issues in the '94-95 application?

thanks for specifics weston on pistons, the non i/c 12v had a different cam. lots more opening duration. also oiling was improved in 91 1/2.

so the 92 pistons are better than the 94?

i shouldnt have any problems with using the 92 shortblock for my p-pump motor?

Garrett

I have 2 of them, one on the stand being built up as we speak, will b P-Pumped

Yeah, thanks for the info. When I changed engines a couple of years ago, I couldn't find anything other than ring gap for differences.

INT. 159° 0.235" EXH. 204° 0.263" Lobe separation 102.0° Stock 2nd Generation 12V

INT. 165° 0.239" EXH. 198° 0.269" Lobe sepation 101.0° Stock 1st Generation 12 valve

You will have to take the front cover off the 94, the P-pump won't bolt up to the VE front cover.

Here's something you might find interesting: Ram Tough Cummins Rebuild

EDIT: I Googled the cam specs, not sure how accurate they are.
