97 f-350 blows starter fuse

my neightbor has a 97 f-350 with a 7.3 in it. he started it yesterday with the auto start to let it warm up, when he put the key in the ignition to drive away it died and blew the starter fuse. he put in another fuse, it turned over some then blew that fues, he put another one in and it would stay turning over but wouldnt fire? im going to look at it tonight with him and see what we can find. any ideas where to start or what to look for? There was a glow plug grounding out the system, i un hooked that and the fuse dosnt blow any more, but the truck still wont start, cranks good.
