98' 6.5 issues help!

[IC-Smoke]

Im tring to help out a friend here... problem is:

1998 6.5 turbo diesel in a 4x4 3500 DRW chevy (or gm cant remember)
If you push on the pedal it will spit and spudder, along with blowing black smoke BUT it will idle fine.....

replaced the fuel filters
replaced cam sensor
replaced lift pump

It will run fine one day (or a few days) then it will act up and you cant drive it.

Any ideas guys?

I would look at the PMD (pump mounted driver)

Also check the vacuum pump. I have seen one do that because the waste gate stayed open. Rich
