any particular reason my heater smells like coolant?

Yup, sounds like a heater core leak... my dash didn't look that bad before we did mine but right about the time we swung the dash assembly forward, all hell broke loose.... good thing I planned ahead and had a new MOPAR dash ready to install.
 
Personally I'd like to build one out of mdf, fiberglass, and bondo but I don't have the time to do so.
 
Does the lack of dash give you better access to #6? The hole looks big enough you could easily get to the upper trans bolts too....
