At what point are o rings needed??

I know the CR head will work on the 12/24V block, but you have to use the 12/24V style head gasket and do some minor modifications to the oil and coolant passeges. I haven't really looked into it much, but why can't you modify the 12/24V block to allow the CR head gasket to work. They say the Cometic MLS gasket is really no better than the stock CR MLS as far as durability, so if the CR MLS is better, what has to be done to use it on a 12/24V block and VP head?
