September at Atlanta Dragway means the diesels are coming. For the 6th year, Diesel Performance Motorsports has hosted diesel drag racing as part of the Hayes Mopar vs The World event. DHRA sanctioned drag racing has been provided by the Diesel Hot Rod Association with 3 classes of competition, Pro Street, Quick Diesel and ET Bracket. Blue skies and 90 degree temps made for a day full of great racing in front of thousands in the stands.

The AirWerks by Borg Warner Pro Street class provided the fans with some great side-by-side action all day. 2006 Champion Philip Palmer had already sewn up the 2007 east Championship and an invite to the finals at Houston Raceway Park October 13-14 but he was reminded the finals wouldn’t be an easy task.

Round one pitted Micky Davis in the Pro Street Diesel Dodge against Matt Wells driving the Silverline Dodge. Davis with the starting line advantage takes the win over Wells running an 11.43 to the slower 12.16 of wells. Kevin Meredith in the TS Performance Dodge would face current Champion Philip Palmer in their first round. Once again a slight starting line advantage for Meredith and a 10.61 was enough to put Palmer on the trailer who had mechanical problems running an 11.65. Jimmy Smith had a solo run by virtue of being #1 qualifier. Jimmy entertained the crowd with a 10.54 pass showing the field he was ready to race.

Round two would have Mickey Davis facing Jimmy Smith to which Micky again using a starting line advantage and a 10.62 ET to win over Smiths 10.64 in a great drag race. Kevin Meredith had the solo pass by virtue of having the best reaction time in the first round.

The final round would prove to be one of the best rounds of the year. The black Dodge 4x4 lined up against the red, white and blue flamed Dodge 4x4 of TS Performance look like a scene from 2005 when these two battled it out all year. As the tree dropped, both trucks leaped from the starting beams pointed towards the finish line and the big check. Both drivers had good reaction times with only .03 of a second difference. Davis runs a perfect 10.500 only to lose to Meredith’s 10.525 pass.

The Valvoline Quick Diesel class was not to be over shadowed by Pro Street. 5 racers, all looking for a chance to be invited to the finals at Houston for the Championship rounds.

Round one would see Matt Wells Jr. Dodge face off against Jeff Garmon in his 2007 Ram 2000. Garmon would have traction problems and Wells would take the win with a 12.25 over Garmon’s 13.24. Bruce Block in his Dodge would face George Cobb in his 1978 Lil Red Cummins Express. Block would use a starting line advantage and a 12.09 pass to defeat Cobb’s slower 12.13. Jim Layden and his Dodge, earned the solo run but still showed his competitors he was ready running a 12.14.

Round two had Layden and Block racing each other. Both drivers had nearly identical reaction times and in side by side action all the way down the 1320, Layden’s 12.10 would be enough to win over Block’s 12.12 pass. Well’s had the solo run but put the pressure on Layden running closest to the index with a 12.05.

The finals between Layden and Wells were also an exciting finish to the quick Diesel class. Both drivers leave within .04 of each other, but Layden showing why he is the current quick diesel champion ran Wells out the end. Layden would win with a 12.08 and Wells would breakout with an 11.96.

The Flowmaster ET Bracket class had about 30 entries. Making it to the final two rounds would require talent and skill. When the rounds were complete, 3 drivers would reach the semi-finals. K.J. Kitchens in the TS Performance Dodge would face Joel Greathouse, also from the TS Performance camp. Greathouse would have a red-light start giving the win to Kitchens who ran a 13.01. Earl Talley of TS Performance in the solo run would make a 13.35 pass earning his spot in the finals against Kitchens.

In the finals, not to be outdone by the other classes, provided another great side-by-side race. Talley’s 13.28 dial would give him a slight starting line advantage over Kitchen’s 13.02 dial. Both drivers with excellent reaction times had the trucks side by side the entire 1320 feet. While Talley’s 13.30 was closer to his dial, the win went to Kitchens who took his .012 reaction time advantage and 13.05 pass to win by 5 thousandths of a second over Talley.

Diesel Performance Motorsports also provided a $200 prize to the quickest manual transmission truck in eliminations. That award was earned by John Porterfield Jr. who would run many low 13 second passes with his Dodge quad cab 4x4 6 speed.

TS Performance provided a total of $500 for the racers with the best package during eliminations. Best package means the total of the drivers reaction time and difference between their Index or dial-in against the actual time ran.

Bruce Block earned this award in the Quick Diesel class with a best package of .138
Kevin Meredith earned this award in the Pro Street class with a best package of .105
K.J. Kitchens earned this award for ET Bracket with a best package of .086

K.J. also earned a $50 bonus for being the best over-all.

Keating Shelley of Keating Machine was on hand with his 8 second Cummins powered Chevy Pro Mod. After his first run, Keating had an uncharacteristic failure in his transmission that sidelined him the rest of the event. Competition Diesel and DP Tuner sponsored his attendance and I know I can speak for those sponsors when I thank him for coming down from Tennessee.

We hope to see everyone at next years 2008 DPM Diesel Shootout.

Thanks for hosting David, as always, a great job. Enjoyed it very much, and look forward to next year.

I had a blast! I will definately be out next year. Thanks for the free dyno!

Nice write up David. This was some of the best diesel racing I've seen.. Congrads to all that raced. And a special thanks for Keating for showing up.

Thanks to both of you for coming out to support the event. Buckshot seems to be a regular fixture of the event but glad you came out this year Tim and will look for you in 2008.

I still can't believe the racing... even as I was putting the numbers together it was just unreal how good everyone has gotten on the track.

TS - what can you say. Brought enough vehicles to make an event by themselves, and enough food to start a trackside cafe'. :thankyou2:

BIG EARL now has a reputation at Atlanta Dragway. If you don't know who big Earl is and you are a bracket racer, you'd better learn which TS truck he happens to pilot. :hehe: The track officials as they were announcing him as being a 1st to double up classes and make it to the finals in each for this event.

Mike and Jordan also handled the dyno duties and as always, they did a great job. Thanks to those two from me.

Garmon's Ram 2000 is SWEET!!! Pictures don't even do it justice. If you get a chance to see this one, take it. I'm personally gonna ask to drive it. :rockwoot:

I really enjoyed the time at the track after the event though...:evil

Excellent Job Dave. I enjoyed myself as always.
