Howdy folks. Just interested in the opinions of some seasoned experts on the topic of streetable horsepower and torque builds. First of all, what do you deem to be streetable HP?

How would you folks ideally go about getting that power? Now, I am asking for individual opinions here, as I'm sure everyone will have something worthwhile to contribute.

I'm kind of "reverse engineering" the numbers on my truck. It's fairly stock yet, but I started with a shift kit and billet tansmission on my 2001 Quadcab/Long box 2500 Auto. After that I added an AFE stage 2 intake. The previous owner had added an Edge EZ, so that remains on the truck. Next came a CFM+ Intake Manifold. My goal here is to sort of get everything in line so that my limiting factor will be, maybe, my injectors? With diesel hovering at around $6.00/gallon where I live, I want to avoid smoke at all costs. This way I can avoid smoke all along...at least until I add big sticks. Does this seem like a sensible approach to anybody else, or do you think I'll have problems with power loss upgrading everything but the injectors?

Everyones input is certainly welcomed on the subject!

Streetable is gonna vary. I like mine clean for normal driving, maybe a slight little haze while accelerating. Smooth power. Not boggy. At WOT I like to see a slight haze at full boost.

Yes, I kind of expect a difference of opinion there...some guys are still calling there 1200 hp trucks streetable while other guys say that 500 hp is just too much. That's good in a way though, as at least between all the different opinions there should be at least a few words of wisdom thrown out there.

My buddy has an 06 mega cab 6spd that lays down 870hp and gets 24.5mpg hand calculated. It drives better than my truck does. I've got friends daily driving 500-600hp trucks with no issues at all. Very little smoke, very little lag (twin turbos), good egt's.

too much air will result in a loss of power but with the right amount of fuel combined with that air a perfect mixture no smoke at all and a better runnin truck, i dont think there is a hp that is un streetable, i think it comes down to ur setup and how laggy it is on the road

Even if you change some things on your truck, say more fuel, you learn to drive around them. It's all in the setup. You can have 500hp and smoke at any acceleration, or you can have 500hp and have almost no smoke.

IMO the best "street" combo that I have found would be a 62 mill charger, 65 or 71 on the back with a set of 110 hp injectors. This can very a ton but, this is a pretty clean set up with the right box. 150 hp sticks would work well too. It all depends on what YOU want to do with your truck. Just DD or do you pull a heavy trailer, alt, mpg, and so on need to be taken in to consideration.

Alright, while we're on the topic of street builds...do you guys prefer your power to run through a slush box, or do you lean more towards a standard transmission?

Total preference there. I just like to shift. But for dragging I'd never be able to hang with a auto with the same hp. But I prefer to shift myself:D

Just kind of curious what kind of guys drive a Cummins equipped truck. Personally, I like the control of a standard, but truth be told, I'm lazy as hell and hate shifting gears...As a result, I drive an auto.

All kinds of guys drive em. Lot's of both on here.

I'd generally pick a stick for towing or sledpulling, and an auto for a drag truck, but you can do any of them with either.

I drive a stick just because i like to shift gears myself when hotrodin. However, I'd rather have an auto for in town driving.

6 speed nv5600. 500 rpms between the low gears. I cruise down the interstate in OD at 1800-2000 then drop one gear for 40 mph. Two if I want to hotrod =P

But if you've already got a built auto stick with it. Boosted launches are sweet.

please explain how you get "too much air" that results in a loss of power without using nitrous

that's my setup. if I turn the sub settings on the comp down to 1 I can run on power level 1x4 with very little smoke.I have seen 19mpg driving like a sissy for a week just to see what I could get. if I wasn't towing I think I would try 150 sticks but it would have a heavier vapor trail for sure and egt's would be toasty with the box turned up.

basicly you need "just" enough air to burn the fuel...too much, and the flame temp drops (EGT) and you loose power. Best power is usually in the 1300-1350F range when it's smoke free. But you are risking hurting a piston.

I thought some of the elite drag racers like stucky or morrison were quoted in Diesel Power stating that maximum HP was around 1600 EGT. Where do you get this 13-1350 from?
