Not hard at all. I had a couple chipping after a few weeks. :bang I just used a pair of pliers with a rag on the teeth and pulled them straight out. They look like the same thing on your wheels. You can order replacement plugs directly from KMC if you were wanting to paint them.
on Edit: If I remember right the "bolt" head is quite a bit larger than the knurled push in piece that goes into the wheel. The hole isn't very large, maybe 3/16 or 1/4?
