Block Heater....

Do you have a multimeter? A simple continuity check will tell you if the cord is bad. Mine had no continuity, so I cut the plug off and tested the wires----good. The plug end was bad and I replaced it with a heavy duty plug end from the hardware store. Easy fix.

Also if this is the case you may want to consider.....(this may seem crazy for some) but you may want to consider then just making the power cord longer with a old extension cord you don't use. That's what I did on my 98 and I added another 25 ft! It was nice because I could go to a restuarant/bar/etc, and plug her in if I knew I was going to be in for a long time. Sounds redneckish. But it was nice.

well pretty sure my batteries are toast...

it is currently -8* this morning and my batteries dont have enough juice to turn the engine over

now i am stuck sitting here waiting on some jumpers....

just wait for the lite to go off and then cycle the key again then when the lite goes off the 2nd time try to start also get the batteries warm in side and then do a load test on them and see if they are good . dont try to charge or load test them if they are cold . when its this cold they can explode when trying these things

The rough idle etc when cold won't really hurt anything, it's just the nature of a cold diesel. I've been driving something with a diesel engine in it for close to 20 years, the newer generations are amazingly better at cold weather starting than what I grew up on. Just make sure the batteries are good and run some anti gel additive, you'll be fine. Also, plan to let the truck idle for at least 5 minutes, 10 preferable. If you do not have the high idle enabled get a stick that you can wedge between the seat and the pedal, it works.

am i the only one whose pyro jumps when the "Wait to Start" light clicks off

Mine jumps too.

Especially on colder days. Was 12* yesterday in State College. Its 0* today. I'm curious to see if it's gonna start right up or not. Like you I don't have a place to plug in - I'm relying solely on the grid heater to get it started.

Bingo. Take the truck to an auto parts store and have them tested for STDs. Sorry that was dumb. But they'll be able to tell you if you have bad cell or what not in the battery.

thanks to 48snowman up here in columbus, i will be getting a ride to autozone

truck wouldnt jump...

just turned REAL slow

and that was after cycling the gird heater...oh well, i just hope the new batteries last longer

Man that sucks, mine did that to me last winter, I think I would be getting a REALLY long extension cord and be running it out to the truck. OH wait never mind the scrappers would probably steal it to get any kind of metal from it.:bang I hate those guys! Good Luck!

lol yea there is always this black fellow digging in the dumpster outside our apartment...

i thought the block heaters need a higher voltage outlet or they would be tripping the breakers

if not, i will run the cord right out my bedroom window

i am now out of a full day of work b/c of this frigid cold front and no place to plug my truck in

I always just plug mine into the outlet in my garage, used to run a cord outside when I was still in school. I would try it, if it trips the breaker, then you know it won't work. That is just my .02

P.S. watch out for those guys, they stole a driveshaft and sway bars out of the bed of my buddy's truck. Kind of his fault for having them in there, but still...

Rick

I havnt been able to plug mine in all winter and the past couple days have been well below 0 and starts right up! Get new batterires and youll be fine. Lastnight was 20 below and fired right up, just let it idle for awhile before driving, mine idles about 10 minutes before i drive away, and make sure your coolant is strong enough!

yea my batteries are the culprit...the are the "titanium" series from advanced auto w/ a 3 year warranty...i just dont have any tools to get them out!!

Glad you found out it was the batteries!

We have the almost same truck with the exact same problem..
