2nd Annual Bluegrass Super Pull Recap
The 2nd Annual Bluegrass Super Pull is now in the books. “This event was the largest pulling event held in the state of Kentucky this year, and one of the largest in the United States.” Said Battle of the Bluegrass Pulling Series President Kevin Fulks. “We had over 220 pullers from 14 states entered in this event and had to turn pullers away.”, commented Fulks.
There was plenty of excitement during the event. On Friday, December 10, the pull got under way at 12 Noon. In session one, the Economy Hot Rod Tractors put on quite a show. Beth Clay lead the class early on, until the last puller, Mitchell Coomer, put the sled on the right hand side of the track and screamed the motor all the way down the track to take the win. The Coomer family picked up another win, when the only Pro Stock 2WD entered to pull against the big motors in the Super Stock 2WD’s, picked up the win. Jason Coomer, Mitchell Coomer’s nephew, took the win and said in his winners circle interview, that it “was a good day for Columbia, Kentucky.” The Light Limited Super Stock Tractors were a very competitive class, with last year’s winning tractor, the “Lil Insane” owned by Brandon and Larry Phillips taking the win. The “Lil Insane” was last year’s winner in the qualifying round. Session one closed out with the Work Stock Diesel Trucks, with Scott Willoughby and Taylor Cooper both hitting the sand pile. When the dust settled, Taylor Cooper was the winner, with Willoughby second and Phillip Irvin taking third in the three way pull off.
Session Two started off with the Super Modified 4WD Trucks. This class had two naturally aspirated trucks, one short blown truck and two stretched super charged long trucks. Hometown favorite Nathan Sewell won the class in his famous “Valley Shaker”. “There’s nothing like winning in your hometown.” commented Nathan Sewell in his winners circle interview. Next up was the wild Light Weight Super Stock Tractors. Larry Phillips put both of his Alky powered pullers in the sand pile, but the last puller, Mike Sandefur(Farm Boys Fantasy) ended up further in the sand pile and winning the class. Sandefur got the fans screaming when his tractor exploded into flames at the end of the run. The Super Modified 2WD Trucks saw another hometown favorite, Mike Zysing take the win on his 3000 horse power Ford. It was his first Battle of the Bluegrass win. The Pro Farm saw another puller take his first BOB Series win. Joey Toadvine, Harrodsburg, KY, held off the class for his first ever win. The evening show was ended by the Pro Street Diesel Trucks. Last year’s Champion, Garrick Gay, Lawrenceburg, KY, took the win just as he did last year.

Session Three, held on December 11 at 12 Noon, had its excitement as well. The Mini Trucks were won by the last puller, Ray Gregory (Little Boogie). The Pro Stock 4WD class saw yet another winner from the 1st annual Bluegrass Super Pull take the win. Marty Luttrell, Frankfort, KY., won back to back Bluegrass Super Pull wins. Marty’s truck named “American Solider” was pulled out on the track along with several National Guard Soldiers’ during the opening ceremonies. In the Light Limited Super Stock Tractors, the Ford Diesel of Tim Hammons held the lead for some time, but again victory was taken from him as it was in Georgetown, KY earlier this year by the Alky burner of David Burnett. Burnett has made some changes to his tractor, and it was really pulling well. The 10,000 Hot Farm had its problems, as several of the tractors could not fit into the smoke machine. Allen Powell had to take a mechanical drop and fix his smoke tube to make the call. He got it fixed, and won the class with the only Case entered. It was his first BOB Series win. Session Three closed out with the next round of qualifying for the Pro Street Diesel Trucks Finals. Clint Corwin, a puller that was second six times in the BOB Series this summer, took the win, but not after being made to adjust his turbo to the new BOB Series rules. “I worked on the turbo with a file for over three hours to make the rules, and it was well worth it.” Commented Clint.
Saturday Night was the Championship night for several classes. The night started off with a bang, when on a fresh track, Garrick Gay in the Pro Street Diesel Truck class nearly climbed the sand pile. The crowd went crazy, and needless to say, the sled was reset. Clint Corwin, who hours earlier had won his first ever BOB Series event, won the Pro Street Diesel(2.6) Championship. He was quite emotional in the Winners circle, as the fans from Ewing, KY cheered him on. The Light Limited Super Stock saw the same thing happen. The winner in the Saturday afternoon session, David Burnett, pulled off yet another win, and was crowned the Champion in his class. Pro Farm was won by Jeff Tackett, with the class being one of the closets all week. US Lube President, Dave Latimer was in the Winners Circle to present the check to Tackett, who uses US Lube in his pulling tractor and on the farm. The Super Modified 2WD Truck class was a repeat from Friday, when again, Georgetown, KY native Mike Zysing won in front of the hometown crowd, his second BOB Series event win in his career. The Outlaw Super Farm Tractors hooked next, with over 20 entries, the largest class of the weekend. This class featured more out of state pullers than any other class, and the big check went to Chambersburg, PA puller Jason Forrester on his Ford. The night closed out with one of the best Outlaw Diesel Truck(2.8/3.0) classes held anywhere in the nation this year. Cole Stephens(Gaston, IN) and his “Cole Train” Dodge took the win. Allen Gaines then pulled his “Orange Blossom Special” stretched Super Modified 4WD, weighing a 1,000lbs light in an exhibition run, barely passing Stephens. The pull ended with the FFA Street Legal Diesel Truck class, with JT Cleaver, from Paris, KY taking the win.
