Budget turbo options.

Taylor you are a different colored person now!!!

To the op a he351cw over a gt4202 off a Detroit would make for a very fast spooling setup that could support over 600 easy.

Rick why dont you do a s475 t6 92mm 1.10 I think it would work great for a vp.

Scott the li 478 is a 6 blade wheel that weighs less than a 472 wheel but flows over 110 lbs if I remember correctly

Learn something new every day. BRE has TONS of options. The OP has budget as requirement. IMHO, why replace soemthing that doesn't need to be replaced. Keep the HX35 and put some thing proven underneath. No need to spend money where it doens't need to be spent. Budget is in the thread title after all.

My best mileage came with the HX35, small (90 HP) injectors and Edge Juice with Attitude box. If you're driving a lot (100+ miles aday is a lot to me) and want decent power and run clean, why screw with what works.

Thanks for clarifying that man. I thought for a second my budget turbo thread was going to turn into a non budget twins thread. LOL

Only resin I said a 351 is because you can use it as a single it will spool faster and make more power than a 35 and will still be a good primary

Yes I do have to many options actually. Makes it hard to think and know what would be best for my needs. Cliff I'm not opposed to anything, I am having be led by the hand on this deal trying to learn.

Stefan, I like both twin ideas for you. I kinda like cliffs idea but like shughes said, that old combo has been proven time and time again.

Yeah I like Cliff's idea too Rick. For me, I'm not looking for anything over the top. I want simplicity and reliability. Of course after I get my trans back from Lavon I will start to weigh my options a little more. I'm just looking for ideas and opinions right now.

I'd take Cliff's opinion over yours when it comes to this. Haha since you wana do some ball bashing. I think I saw the ratard comment thrown my way earlier in the thread. :D

Now you listen here Cinderalla... you back you pantys out a notch or two or Im gonna be required to actually try on this. Lol

Yea yea we all know Cliff is perfect but you forget that it is Wade that knows all.

Back on topic, why dont you just throw a large sum of money on the table and buy all knew chargers? Id vote super B but that is as much as any smaller charger that would be a better pick. With that being said, Id find a good 351 and go Cliffs route if your charger is in sad shape. If not I would stick the ht3b under it and fly away. Oh and dont forget the steed speed and external gate. Thats on my list to do which is why my twins will never be built... I have no monies.

If you want an upgrade that is not twins he351, if you want twins a ht3b or the gt4202's can be found cheap, the 4202 is newer technology will spool faster and flow more but they are harder to find used in good shape. A new ht3b is roughly the same cost as the 42

Let me ask you this... Why do some people prefer the comparable garretts over the S475-480? Ive yet to learn this... Is it to do with the exducer side? exhaust side?

Garretts may be an all around better charger...but for our applications they are still the new kid on the block, so to speak. I think Garrett is just now/recently making parts combinations that are suitable for us. Holset designs the chargers for Cummins, therefore they have worked for a long time.

All in all, there really isnt any reason to go garrett over borg?

Garrett offers ball bearings if that is what you're after. I'm don't know enough about all the differences to make a truly educated statement. I guess it all depends on how much research you realy care to do. Depending on application, I largely like to learn from the mistakes and triumphs of others here on CompD.

For the OP's budget minded mild upgrade....I have made my opinion clear. For your needs...you have a lot of options, and I'm not certain what your goals are.

Garretts are more $$ plain and simple.

Garretts are more expensive, usually, but they also spool quicker, but if you want to rebuild them, you have to buy an expensive center section.

I will run my Borg Warner/Switzer stuff

Only on the ball bearing units they make them all in journal bearings as well which you can rebuild. The gtx series is only available at this time in bb as far as I know.
In Garrett nomenclature with the gt series, the first 2 numbers are for the turbine size which is within 3 mm of the number x2. So a gt 42 has an 82mm turbine inducer. The last 2 numbers describe the exducer of the compressor wheel, so the gt 4202 has a 102 mm exducer, where the gt4294 has a 94mm exducer. If there is An r after the turbo like gt4202r it's a ball bearing unit. If it has a gtA on it then it is a snub nose shaft where the compressor wheel has threads and no nut is used. These are commonly found on you industrial or over the road applications.

Look at Cliff with the big brain.
