Is this really needed? I Read about in the cummins comp section and know first hand how hard it is to move a cam gear even with a 20 ton press!

Clarification might help. You talking about the "cam" retainer or "cam gear" retainer?

it can be a concern when you have helical cut gears, it's not a concern with straight cut gears like on the common rail engine.
