My friend has a 96 5 speed stock 4x4 dodge estended cab truck. He wants a 6 speed and found a deal on a 2006 totalled 6 speed. Can he swap the 2006 6 speed into a 96 1st gen???
Thanks,

And if so what off the 2006 will he need. is this a easy swap?/

Do a little research, the search button is your friend. Not the easiest swap you could do and I wouldn't bother swapping in a G56 anyway. Also, a 96 is a 2nd gen.

Get a clutch for a G56, notch the crossmember and you're gold. Pretty sure you can just bolt up the 5 spd 241, but you can just swap in the 271 that would come with the G56.

Yes, it's been done. You will use the trans mounting plate that was on the 12v originally. The g56 is 3 3/4 inches longer if i remember correct. The t case will bolt/spline up. You will need to use the a clutch/flywheel setup for the g56. The 2nd gen slave cylinder will work with the g56 and vise versa. The g56 is quite a bit taller than the nv4500 also. You'll want to make sure that it doesn't touch the cab floor. The shift tower is the same location for the nv4500/nv5600/g56. I put a nv4500 in my 06 in one afternoon, it was not that complicated. A friend of mine put my g56 in his 12v and it was a little more involved, but not rocket science

The nv4500 and nv5600 have a slightly taller overdrive gear than the g56. Unless you're lacking in hp, towing a lot, and need the other extra gear i wouldn't waste my time and effort. If making much power, i deffinately would choose the nv5600 over the g56 even if the g56 is cheap. the cast iron case on the nv5600 is twice as tough as the cast aluminum case of the g56.

So if the he has 3:55 gears and standard tires with nv4500, its running 2000rpm at 70 in 5th gear. What would the G56 be doing. No sense doing the swap if in 6th on the g56 the rpm be at 2000 or close at 70.

With the G56 in 6th gear the rpm will be around 2200 @ 70 mph. With a NV5600 in 6th gear the rpm will be the same as the NV4500 in 5th gear. Both 6 speeds have the extra gear add in the middle.

If you would have spent some time using google to research transmission gear ratios you would have already figured this out.
