Codes and abnormally large amounts of smoke

So I was pulling my camper trailer this weekend, had the edge comp on 2x5, stock injectors and turbo. I was about 1200 EGT's and the coolant temp spiked for a second and the motor cut out, like it defueled. I let off the throttle and let the coolant back down. I continued to drive with no problems other than I am getting tons of black smoke. Power and everything else seems to be normal. No coolant or fuel in oils and no blue smoke. Idle seems normal.

I have had problems getting it to pass emissions with everything stock for a couple of years. it blows a 17.5% opacity. the limit is 20%. I ran the codes and I am getting the notorious 216 and a 217. timing malfunction and coolant temp.

Can anybody tell me what is going on? Is the the pump toast?

Any help is appreciated, before I go throwing parts at it.

I cleared the codes and everything seems to be running normally...Should I still be looking at replacing the pump?

Ok, I replaced the VP44 and so far no codes or previous symptoms.

Now I need to know what boost I should be seeing without the wire tap? I am getting about 22 pounds without the tap. Does this sound correct? What should amount should I see with and without? I remember alot more with the tap! If This doesn't sound right, is there something I am overlooking?

Please refresh me on this part of the edge comp as it has been a long time since I have dealt with this P.O.S.

Easy on the comp. I love mine. I don't know what you should see without the wire tap and that turbo/injector combo, on 2x1 with my wire tapped i see fourty, but i also have an adjustable boost elbow.

22 psi sounds about right, without the wire tap. A stock truck usually runs about 17-20 psi, but you have the Mach 4 injectors.

Thanks guys, I guess I will reinstall my MACH 4's and turbo to see what I can get there. I really don't like the way it drives without the wire tap.

I'm getting 38psi with my stuff and Comp not currently tapped but still connected at the MAP wiring/boost fooling & boost elbow.

If you have a boost elbow or have pinched the wastegate line, you should see more than 22 psi boost with a non-tapped Edge comp. I'd say depending on load, you should be able to hit 28-30 psi. If the wastegate is stock and has never been fiddled with, 22 psi is normal.
