hey everyone ok so here is the deal. i have an 02 3500 dually. it was wrecked when it had 1200 miles on it however it has 123,000 on it know and there were not any prob. now to the confusing part..... there is a crazy vibration at speeds over 65mph. the transfer case just got rebuilt yesterday and i just got the rear drive shaft back from the machine shop last week where it was completely rebuilt. the rear axle was rebuilt as well because we initially thought that is was the issue. ALL VIBRATION STOPS when the front drive shaft is removed. have tried two diff front shafts and both have made the vibration return so that cannot be the issue. all u joints are new or in great condition. tires are not the issue either today i tried two diff sets and it vibrated with both. the pinion seal and bearing are good on both rears and all ball joints are fine and the hubs were just replaced to eliminate them from the equation. any ideas?
thanks
drew

2002's don't have the CAD (the 2 piece axle disconnect). All the parts in the front axle turn all the time whether you are in 4wd or not. Could be a bad u-joint or bearing in the front axle.

i know the u joints are good but do you mean a bearing inside the carrier? i know the wheel bearings are good

Could be anything inside the frontend. Without the CAD everything spins at road speed all the time. On the 01 and older trucks with the CAD the the front axle is completely disconnected from the drivetrain when in 2wd.

yeah thats what i was afraid of. i guess i will have to pull the front end apart and see if anything looks out of whack or place

This only only partly true about the CAD. My buddy has a 95 that we chased a very similar problem with and it was a bearing on the CAD that would start making all kinds of noise at different speed it would come and go as it pleased. Stuff does still turn in there even if you have a CAD.

Just a guess here.If you or someone else replaced the u joint it is possible one pin is not where it should and could make it shimmy.I have done it myself once.

i thought the same thing thats when i tried to different drives shafts and they both did it. a buddy noticed today that my yoke looks like it is worn out and the caps are spinning on it even with the straps tightened down so tomorrow i will try and change that out and if the vibration is still there i will have to pull the front rear apart and see if the spiders or bearings inside are bad

True the driver side and half the passenger side axle still turn, but the carrier, ring and pinion, and driveshaft don't.

the d shaft may spin a bit though.... because of the gears in the t-case... and the swirly fluid

Correct... When we were trouble shooting we didnt even think of those parts moving and was the last thing we checked/replaced... Litteraly everything from the rear axel forward was either checked and/or rebuilt/replaced.

There is no bearing on the CAD. Do you mean a hub bearing?

It sounds to me like your drive shaft angles are messed up. Some 02s had CAD and some did not. Its a simple matter of looking to tell.

If it is a non-cad and the problem was in the front axle it should vibrate all the time even with the front drive shaft out.

i hope a shaft is not bent in the trans because that means i have to pull it out again to check

I highly doubt that is the case...taking the front driveshaft out would not eliminate the vibration caused by a trans.

yeah this is true. i hope tomorrow when i put the new yoke in that the prob is fixed if not looks like i am gonna have to take the front cover off and see whats going on in the diff.

had the mexican guy at a tire shop tell me this the other day " CHOCKS IS NO GOOD!"

just a thought

That or putting in the wrong u-joint, driveshaft that was put back together wrong, the list goes on.

Does the truck in question have a lift on it?

There is a support bearing near the CAD in the tube. That is what he is likely talking about.
