I'm looking to put disc brakes on the rear wheels of my '01 2500, and I was wondering if any of you lovely folks have any experience with this? Do you know of anybody that makes a good conversion kit?

My advice: replace complet axle, its cheaper and more reliable

I think he just means its cheaper to find a disc version than to go through all the work involved converting it... Put an add in racingjunk.com , I did and had 2 ready to buy in 48 hours. Where are you located? I know there is one for sale in MI...

I live in Northern Alberta, Canada...that's the main reason why I'm such a rookie when it comes to the whole diesel performance thing. I hear there's one good performance shop in Camrose, but otherwise...all the diesels on the road are basically bone stock, with the exception of programmers, intakes, and exhaust...

Ebay might help, I have been keeping an eye out myself for a D80 with disc brakes.

Just swap in a disk brake axle. Everything bolts right up for the most part I believe.

Technically you need to change the proportioning valve.

Yes you should. But just to get the truck back up and running you don't HAVE to. It's VERY highly recommended.

Are the conversion kits that costly (or problematic) that swapping out the axle and proportioning valve still works out being a better bet?

Don't know about costly or problematic, but it would be easier to just swap out whole rear ends. My buddy got a dana 70 rear disk axle for like $250-$300.

Are the disk brake rear ends lighter weight? If so, how many pounds do they save?

Would I gain any real benefit going to a hybrid Dana 80 on my 2500? I heard that even the Dana 70 axle itself is rated for 7500lbs, but it's the stock wheels and tires that lower the GAWR (to, I believe 6080#) on these trucks. Does anybody know anything about that?

There may be better ways to spend money and time...but very few of them result in your truck stopping sooner, and more reliably.

i put a kit on my 97 2500 with d80. place is called tsm brakes 303-688-6882. look them up or give them a call. my stock rear brakes sucked and went throught rotors and pads on the front like mad. put his kit on and now ever 2 or 3 years i change pads and it's cheaper to change pad then shoes. if you don't care about parking brake there kit is well worth it.

Ah, ok...this is the kit I heard about! I talked to a few guys who said it was working really well for them, but nobody could seem to give me a company name. I'm gonna have to look into this a bit further now...

Thanks alot guys!
