CR melted piston discussion, why, why not, and for the love of god how not to..

I work at the cummins technical center in columbus, IN. come by and Ill show you

Does cummins do all the programming of the ecm's on 5.9 cr marine motors? And if so would that programming be easier manipulate? Would the cummins insite software be any help with said motors? I've kicked around a few ideas for the last year now.

3 grand!!!! OOOOOH!!

Well, maybe that's not in the cards for me right now....

So your saying there were custom and we can't get them anymore.....Who made them??

Yeah they are Mahle's pistons, monotherm is their trademark for the one piece steel, they have had them in the larger engines for quite a while now.

The story went they were in the works for some military marine engines that needed to be bullet proof.

When I got mine it sounded like that might have been the last set, unless they did another run, but it didn't sound like they could get the price any better either.

I believe if you're going to make big HP with a CR water injection is going to be needed even though your pyro isn't indicating it. The 12v tuners are using water on anything much over 700 hp and some under that number.

if, when I pull my head I find melted piston/s.... I may have to agree on the steel. If I don't though, not sure they'd make a difference. My truck has seen extreme heat on many occasions.

Ty,

Look at your piston tops, I am sure that they look like mine since your build was the same as mine. Scheid actually cut the bowls on them, I will try and find some pictures of them when I can and post them for everyone to see.

Coating does not seem to help either. Just talked to my builder earlier today and I have 4 melted slugs. These were Polydyne coated tops and teflon on skirts. This was a decompressed motor as well. This makes the 3rd time in a year I have melted pistons. Just about to the point of making the mega into a tow rig again and buying a 12 valve truck.

Hoping someone has some ideas:bang tired of throwing cash at it and not getting anywhere.

Here's my idea and I'm sure quite a few will agree.
Coated 03/04 pistons, 03/04 nozzles and an ECM to match.

Follow that with a good cam and some water if you like it and I'll bet money you won't tear it down again for a long time.

Here's another question I was wondering about....how many miles roughly have these 04.5 and up meltdown trucks been modded?

Had less than 1500 miles on this motor..10 passes at the track and about the same number of dyno pulls.

Anyone have a work around for using an 04 ecm on an 06? With the TIPM on the 06s, I would think it would be a real issue to use an 04 computer and have all the auxiliary electronics work as they should. Then again maybe not

I had less than 300 miles on a modded motor 90k on the motor itself... im going to run 03-04 psitons and nozzles and maybe a ecm still trying to figure out if a 06 ecm will work.... i think the more firing event would help.. have a 12v effect so much fuel that it can burn it...lol

Not sure if the extra fuel cooling effect works that well in this situation. Mine was smoking heavily when it let go.

pure hybrid, who if any, currently in the game of programming or not, have gotten the closest to crackin the code? I know its a cryin shame van aaken went out when they did, sure seemed like they were poised on greatness........ think about it, while I add more water to my tank.......

I don't think it'll matter what anyone does for tuning. It is a matter of making power for a long time and the piston temp just keeps on rising. The only way around it is to use sometime of artificial cooling (whether it is some extreme coating or water). Piston temp has to be brought down, period. Over-fueling will not help things out. It could actually make things worse because of the longer burn of the 04.5+ programming.

Anyone tried putting the 03-04 ecm on the 04.5-05 and keeping the newer pistons and stix? Possibly use the qsb marine pistons?

Like I posted before, qsb 480 pistons, 03-04 nozzles and ecm would be the ideal, swapping a older ecm into a 04.5 truck could be a real PITA.

And if your class lets you, SPRAY WATER.

Oh and throw the pressure box in the garbage, think I just blew the tip off a injector. :bang

The trend is pointing at the sledpullers, who stay in it 3 times longer or more than the drag racers.

Heat over time, even the combo above is going to melt down if you double....triple the HP and dont use water injection.

So Mr Brown....... What r u doing to keep things alive? Or what things are you NOT DOING?
Thanks

Has anyone melted there motor with out running extra rail pressure?
