Cummins 12V pistons: Marine versus Mahle

so what do you guys recommend, i am getting ready to buy some pistons, mahle 155,s marines what part number mahle do you recommend.

I just replaced the pistons in mine this week. Those 286050's are a true marine piston with a 52.3cc bowl it also has the thicker top ring land of 14.38mm but uses the smaller pin of 40x75.8. I ended up useing a 286021 for its still big pin of 40x82.8 and the even thicker TRL of 14.45mm, it does have a little bowl of only 41.5 though so I got the wrist pin moved up .010" to help with that some. It with a .020" HG should still be a pretty good bit of compression, I unlike many had no intentions of cutting any off the decks.

hey ryan smokem is helping me with my new motor setup, i am looking at the mahle 286110's or 286210, whats your thoughts on them or do you think the marines are better, its for a twin turbo application. also whats your thoughts on rings standard or total seals, its a street/pulling truck, not daily driver probably 10,000 miles or so a year.

Man not sure, both pistons you mentined have the 14mm TRL which is good. The 286210 has a 43.2 cc bowl and the smaller w. pin. The 286110 has a larger bowl volume of 47.1cc and the same 40x75.8mm w.pin. I think the best one on paper anyway is the 286030 but it ended up not being available anytime soon, the 286020 was my second choice and it was only available in the .010 relocated W.pin in the bore that I was hunting. I think they all have to be pretty darn good, after studing them all I found i had about the worst ones stock and they still took an unbelievable amount of punishment for many hundreds of sub 6 second runs at over 2000 deg. Im hoping this much thicker 14mm TRL will give me even more dependability. There are some big bowled pistons that will really help get the compression down if you wish: the 286050 is 52.3cc, the 286110 being 47.1cc, and the 286140 at 53.0 cc these have the much wider open bowls even the 286090 at 45.5cc. Youd need to get with Weston and discuss injector spray patterns with which ever pistons your most leaning twards. Hope this info can help.

thanks allot ryan i shot ya a pm explaining, i think the 286110's are good and have them coated skirts and tops by swain coatings, should be bulletproof hopefully, allot cheaper than marines and probably gonna be stronger. thanks guys for the info.

Got quoted $99 a hole for the Mahle #286140WR-040 That seem to be an exact copy of the 370 Marines. With teflon coated skirts.

Also

17.5 Compression Height

53cc Bowl

Graphite Coated skirts

Dual Steel Inserts on top rings

Interesting to knew why they have different comp ratio:

Cummins 15.3:1

Mahle 17.5 :1

Lots of good info in this thread. Thanks to all that posted!

makes me wanna build an engine:bang

I ended up using a 286021...it does have a little bowl of only 41.5 though

Ryan

how can raising the wrist pin boss help with a smaller bowl???

combine the raised wrist pin boss with a 020 thick gasket and that smaller bowl is gonna be even further away from the injector

or is it a typo and the pin is actually lower in your piston?
