So i had some free time this weekend and decided to paint my vale cover. Well didnt exactly turn out the way I had it pictured in my head. Color combo looked awesome, but trying to get everything masked off and the fact that it was o humid that it wouldnt let the paint dry just kinda turned out nasty.

So here is my question. Im thinking of grinding off and polishing everything but the center stripe and DODGE (might grind that off too). But can this be done? I dont want to start grinding and something goes bad. My idea is to keep the center stripe and maybe the small CUMMINS or big DODGE and paint the Flat black, then paint the rest of the cover Gloss white. I know white, its going to get oil and dirt all over it, oh well, I plan on puting a lot of clear coat on it so i can just wipe it off. This combo looks real sharp, but I just cant get it to look right with all the small letters and stuff. plus I think taking everything off will give it a cleaner look!

Paint the whole thing black...then paint the whole thing white. Then sand the letters down with a VERY flat sanding block till you get through the white paint and the black shows through, then clearcoat. I did that with mine(different colors though) and it turned out great. It does take some time and patience though. I have some pictures I'll post if I can find them...

If you want to grind on it, I would buy a spare to play with then sell your stocker when you get it like you want it.

I had the letters machined off of mine, IC-SMOKE did it for me, I am still working on it, but there is a picture to give you an idea of what it would look like

hey thanks! That looks so mcuh cleaner. With paint everything sticks out like a wing on a ricer!

Hey, Bosshawg...are hood stacks legal for street use in your area? I'd love to do that to my truck, but aparently the D.O.T. frowns upon that here...

Hopefully I can get you a picture of it on the truck this week. The rest of the underhood looks like crap, but as least the valve cover will look good.

Hood stacks legal......Its debatable, but I havent found anything against it. Had it for 5 or so months and never had one problem!

Boss, I agree that machining the letters off is the best option. It will look better in the end instead of grinding them off. I painted mine red before but didn't like it so I painted it black and polished all the letters. It took me alot of time and effort to mask off everthing. Next time I will just have most of it machined off so I do have to put up with masking. BTW, do you have a schedule of pulls in indiana this summer? PM me please.

Hood stacks are illegal for road use in ALL states!! It's a federal and state law that all exhaust must exit a vehicle BEHIND and/or ABOVE the passenger compartment.:poke:

Well, Legal or not, I have had ZERO problems with it. Driven it in 4 states and even had troopers and local police give me thumbs up. Now if i drive it through some huge city, it might be another story. The biggest reason most cops dont care is that im not stupid with it. i dint go around running 3k rpm and 2am through town, or blow smoke at ever shift. I like it, and Im in the process of making another set up (going with a 7"!!)

I think Im going to do a bit of work to the cover this weekend and hopefully it turnes out better!

I ground/polished mine.:drool1:

Here's just a few of mine. I painted the whole thing red and then sanded the letters down to bare metal. I should have cleared it all after I was done. It would have made cleaning easier.

I have a polished cummins valve cover. Polishing is nice but it requires alot more maintinance than a painted one
