I'm going buy another head and have it port and polished, HD valve springs installed and have it cut for o-rings. Will a non-HO head work on a HO engine?

I dont believe there are any differences among any of 24v heads? Some please clarify though

CR head

Not to thread jack but I see some people putting the CR head onto the vp powered trucks. What all has to be done for this to work and what is gained?
Thanks

The only difference I know of is in late 2001 hard seats were introduced.

yes the cr heads are cast a lot better for flow. I ported my vp head and my new cr head and spent a third of the time on the cr head. The cast is almost too good, it gets thin in places behind the seats.

is there any one on here that has done the swap and if so was it worth the money spent? And is it comparable in cost to getting a new stock head and having the machine work done to that?

it would depend on how much you can find a cr head for. i heard a cr head is about the same as a vp stage 2 port job head. My situation my stock head had 3 cracks in it so went to cr head. After putting a cr head on mine and 093 connector tubes with out a box hooked up it really sprung to life. i would go cr head then down the road if you need more air port the cr head.

a brand new 24v head is about the same price as a new cr head from cummins like $1100-1200 fully loaded but you can always find a used one for alot cheaper

you will not find a "brand new" vp head. at least I couldn't. when I bought my new cr head it was alot cheaper than a reman vp head.
I had a post up about it a couple months ago.

If your planning on P-pumping in the future you might not want a CR head, i dont think it will clear with out putting a manifold on it.

i do plan on going to a p-pump when this vp dies.

i thought they had a p-pumped CR? how did they get around it? custom manifold?

yeah, but im not sure how much better a CR head is than a VP head if they both have a manfold and porting done
