ok guys i want to upgrade my turbo from a 62/71/13 to a 64/71/13 or a 66/71/13ss. what do you guys think would be better for my setup

i hardly ever tow, race, or pull. just looking for a fun daily driver. i'm concerned about the lag of the 66 but was wondering how much my 6 speed would help with spool. i would really like to hear from guys running both the 64 and 66

thanks
jason

the 62 is good for 600 horse.

manuals increase lag, i do get where the myth came from that they spool a turbo better.

my 66/71/14 was a blast to drive when my truck was an auto, when i swapped to a stick it surged, and was a smokey mess.

IMO the turbo you have is going to be the best turbo for your set up.

that's interesting, i had a lot of people tell me that the 62 isn't enough for 600. i'm gonna be dynoing next week so i'll know for sure then.

my current goal is 600hp and i was thinking that the 64 or 66 would give me a more reliable 600hp than the 62. again though, i want something that is steetable and doesen't smoke everyone out on the road.

I did 612hp with a ps62.

I have the 64 and it doesn't have much lag, I run with a smarty and have dynoed my truck at 500hp. Its a good turbo even if you want to pull a trailer, no problem with it.

You should be able to spin up a 64 or a 66 no problem. If you plan on doing more to your truck soon (maybe bigger injectors for instance) then go to the 66 and just get it done now. If you plan on keeping it the way it is for a while then get the 64. Either way you cant loose cause they both flow more air then most people believe

My brother has a 62/71/13ss, he hit 554hp with it. If he turns Smarty above sw3, it gets hot fast. If its good for 600hp, must be with water?

I'm curious how it gets hotter above level 3 on the smarty? I was under the impression that level 3-9 added the same amount of power and fuel but level 3 just wasn't the catcher software?

Prob cause the higher lev add fuel. With more fuel you get heat, if you don't have the air in... it will stay hot. I have the same prob. I have fuel for 700hp but enough air(turbo) for 500. = high egt s

I know common rails are different, but I just switched from 62/71/14 to 64/71/14. I haven't had much seat time for accurate comparison, but I can say this....The 64 lights about 50-100rpm slower than the 62. My egts seem to be around 300* cooler under normal driving [wot LOL]. The common rails light turbos faster than my beloved vp, so I don't see how a Silver Bullet wouldn't be the ideal turbo fo CR trucks.

Tyler is thinking about the 2nd gen smarty, not the 3rd gen smarty.

And Jamie Lent's brother has a an 04.5 so 3rd gen smarty.

thanks for the input guys!! i highly doubt that i will upgrade the injectors anytime soon because to do that i would have to upgrade my cp3 too. i'm just afraid of having too much lag with the 66. however if the lag isn't bad then i would jump on it in a second. i don't know what i'll do:bang

you definitely need to upgrade your turbo to unleash the beast under your hood!! when i talked to htt they said that it would be $375 for them to upgrade my 62 to a 64, or 66 and $550 for them to go upgrade, inspect the turbo, and give another 1yr warranty.

thanks for the info, i wonder how much slower the 66 lights than the 64.

pm me if you want to get rid of the 62/71/13ss. This is the turbo I am looking for

The reason his EGT's are getting high, is because he is probably running out of fuel on higher levels. That is why a RP gauge is a must to tune the CR motors. My 64/71/13ss with Flux 3's will not go over 1400* with Smarty TNT/r and Edge EZ turned up.

I made 598.71hp without any tuning(1st dyno run). I don't know what level the Smarty was on because the OBD II fuse fried and I was worried I blew something else.

The 64/71/13ss is a little laggy, but only for 2 seconds. After that,it lights up and your sideways.
