decking the head and 181 cam

I just got a call today about this from the shop building mine. Told me they'd need a second head gasket. One to use for checking clearances and a second one for when they put it together.

I maybe dumb but why not use an old one if it is the same setup...O-Ring or Fire Ring.

Zach,

This is what we can go over while visiting Sunday------
My block was decked, piston protrusion 35, head milled 05, fire ringed 2554.340x.125, marine gasket.
My pistons were kissed by my over revving motor valves.
How do you measure proper clearance for a bigger cam ?

That's what I've been wondering as well. Why burn a new gasket if you have an old one sitting there. Slap it on Torque it down and if anything it should compress more than the new gasket would so you should have a little safety factor built in.

But since I've never done this before and I'm about to attempt this also with my freshly O-ringed ported head I'll let someone who knows more answer.(Please?)

I got a call and they were ready for the gasket right then. Deck plate was rented and they were ready to go. Ran into a snag finding the head studs so I'll just have to pay to rent the deck plate again when the rest of the parts are here. On the plus side it gives me a chance to find a used 6.7 head gasket.

Just remember heat cycles and retorques will sink the head closer to the pistons. Hope they know that. Just food for thought.
