ok on my buddies truck we modded his afc the other day (just ground the barrel and flipped the washers) put it together and it ran great, well today he calls me and says the truck will no longer run. he says it starts up just fine but will only run for 30-60 seconds then kinda dies of (he says it act's like its running out of fuel) but it will start right back up and will do the same thing. we did to his afc the same thing ive done to mine and drove mine for the last 6 months with no problems..

trucks a '97 auto, 200k+ miles, mod's are hx40/55 twins, 5x16's, zero plate, 4k gsk and now the modded afc.

he did drive it around low of fuel -1/8 tank down to E.

i was thinking maybe the lift pump finally decided to go due to the high miles and being ran low? what are your guys thoughts on this?

does he have aftermarket lift or stock jockey cause ive seen the same thing happen to a friends ve pump first gen. stock lift went out did the same then wouldnt run at all

Check the shut off solenoid... It may be getting in a bind somewhere

im having him check that when he gets home, that was the main problem why i got it, wouldnt fuel hardly at all and would only make 20psi.

stocker with 200+ thousand miles on it, thats why i was thinkin it went bad but someone local mentions that it could be orings in the injection pump but that just dont sound right cuz ive never heard any horor stories of pepople flipping the washers and killing the ip. and i did the exact same thing i did on mine with zero issues

yea what @cumminstoked said check that ive seen that as well when people are too lazy to remove burnt solenoid or replace it lol and stock lift pumps aint too expensive either just pick up a new one its like a 15 minute job, also if stock replacement lift doesnt go on very easy bump motor, turn over just a hair so its not standing on the cam*

When starting it back up after it stalls is it does he have to prime it, does it have a long crank, stumble and smoke, or just fires back up and runs normal? Has he checked to make sure the shutoff solenoid bolts are tight, and plugged all the way in? I've also seen torn boots stick in the shutoff solenoid spring and not allow it to go up all of the way.

He says it fires right back up, the boot was torn and we have one on order but the local diesel shop told him to just remove the old boot tell the new on comes in & he'd be ok... I'm going to head over after work to see what's going on with it.
Now, IF the shut off is working properly (probably isn't, but I like the what if, plan b option) what would the next thing to cause this issue?

Did you change the fuel filter?

Even with a plugged filter the fuel will sometimes slowly fill the canister allowing for start up or a short burst of power, when the motor uses the fuel in the canister it will sputter or even die

Just a thought as the same thing happened to my friend over the summer

Fresh fuel filter, I'm pretty positive it's the solenoid. Just brain storming other options just for sh!ts & gig's

I'll bet it's the shutdown solenoid.

When it dies, tell him to leave the key in the run position and check the solenoid to see if it's in the up/run position or down/off position.

Sometimes you need to adjust the linkage a hair longer so that the plunger can come all the way up into the shut-down solenoid's (hold) electro-magnet. If the AFC was messed with, there's a chance you bumped the orientation of the shut-down solenoid.

If the solenoid is staying up and the truck is still dying, I'd start tearing into the lift pump system. Acknowledging the new fuel filter, the first place I'd check is the fuel bowl pre-screen (simple remove, clean, reinstall).

Ended up being the solenoid like thought, it was " binding" up and not lifting all the way. The ball / socket type deal on the end kept popping out. Local diesel shop said to pry the little ring clip out to try and get to bite better & if it still came out to epoxy it in so that's what we did..
