Dying VP44, higher egts=timing issues?

Pretty sure the VP is on its way out on my 99.

Having hard starts intermittently, but no codes yet.

I also really think this truck runs hotter than it should EGT wise, both empty and while towing heavy.. WAAAAY hotter than my 12v does with more hp.

I've heard that the timing control can get out of whack with a VP as they near death? Is this accurate?
If so, that could be the reason my EGT's are high.. Maybe the timing is staying too low.

Any ideas/opinions?

Is it harder to start when the motor is warm? If so then it's most likely the VP. And yes, the timing can get out of whack.

Yes, its harder to start mainly when warm. Sometimes cold as well.

99% of the time it's a VP. How many miles on it? I'm sure you've got a fuel pressure gauge on there but what's it reading?

125k on it. I haven't had a chance to rig up the Quadzilla fuel pressure sender to the FASS, but upon initial FASS install we had 16PSI at idle.

If its low now its my fault, $hit happens.

Ok. I doubt it's low. But that's a lot of miles on a VP and that's when my factory one started getting weak. I'd say it's a safe bet that it's the VP.

Man, yall've been having all sorts of bad luck with these trucks lately.

Heh you ain't lying there... I hope the new VP fixes the high EGT's.. Otherwise I'll have to swap in a CR or a P-pump.. I have too much in the truck to dump it now, and it doesn't tow 17k worth a crap egt wise.. And I want to tow 26k when all is said and done!

I knew the VP going was a given, I planned for that, I just hope it takes care of the EGT issues.

What's all on the tow rig? And what are your egts? I know with just an EZ, a bhaf, and 4", my egt's would never go over 950* pre turbo. Factory they were 1200*.

Lets see.. Spearco IC, Stage 3 Water with 220 pump, Adrenaline with PCM, 150HP sticks, 62/12/65 no wg Dynomite diesel turbo, AFE race version intake, CFM intake manifold and some other stuff.

I know you are going to say "OMG its the stickz" but its not IMO.. I couldn't gross 32k with stock injectors, an HX35/40, with the Adrenaline on the lowest setting and maintain 70MPH without backing out of it due to EGT's.

Hmm. That setup should tow with no problem. Have you checked valve lash? Boost leaks? What program in the quad? Has the truck always had EGT issues? I know the VP can cause high egt's if the timing module is going out but I'm wondering if something else might be goofy.

No boost leaks, can hit 53PSI (stock hg, whoops). Standard program in the quad (though I do like the beta stuff for street driving).
Every time I've towed since I've had the Adrenaline installed the EGT's were higher than expected, and the truck was especially doggy when stock..
Maybe it was going when I first got it, and the Adrenaline just woke it up some more before it dies.

Haven't checked valve lash yet.

I did clean the IAT, and even though it looked quite clean, the truck seems a bit more responsive now.

1 thing maybe to note, I did notice that the Snow monitor generally shows 1-3 PSI boost than the Adrenaline shows, and the Adrenaline does read off the MAP sensor.. And I did happen to throw an P0236 code.. but at the same time I did hit 50+ PSI on that drive.
Any ideas there?

I wouldn't worry to much about that code. Mine will pop that on occasion.

What kinda egt's are you seeing?

I am seeing 1050-1150 just cruising with 17k behind me.. Small hills get it to the red.
My 12v tow rig ran at 950 with a 10k heavier load and we never had to kick the cruise out for hills at 70MPH.

Empty my EGTs with the Quad on zero is 800-900 degrees!

Swap a different pyrometer setup in and see if you get the same readings. Could be a bad thermocouple, gauge, etc.

When towing, does your water temp act like the egt gauge is correct? Running sustained egt's around 1100 i would think your water temps would be rising enough to keep the fan clutch cycling all the time. At least on my 01 if i'm working it hard enough to sustain egt's that high my water temps will start creeping up and then the fan clutch will engage and bring temps back down.

Chris

I have dual pyrometers, one for the Quadzilla Adrenaline and one on the Snow Monitor. They are correct.

Coolant temperatures do get too high for my liking as well. I've seen between 190 & 230 (in the middle of the line) the Adrenaline doesn't seem to read over 200 degrees, it just changes to a zero. It only happens up longer hills and while in town, even only towing about 12k.

I've never heard my fan kick on yet..

Pressure wash out behind the radiator and blow all the bugs and stuff out. Extend the breather tube further down. That might help too.
