First gen purchase and build to come and progress

Flashback 20 some odd years ago and you would find me on my family's farm sitting in my dad's first gen w250 single cab long wheel base with a manual trans ve pumped hot air truck with 4.10 gears that was purchased as a demo from a dealer then put to work on our farm somewhere in the mix little did I know after being born in June of 1987 later in life I would drive that truck as my first diesel back from one of the fields my dad was harvesting cotton in then he and I were the only two in the field and he needed a way to get the truck back to the barn for the night and he also had to get the ole 9900 John Deere two row picker back as well so he backed the truck up far enough he could dump the clutch in 1st gear and let me follow him in the picker to get it back to the barn I followed him back that night just barely big enough to sit in the seat and see over the wheel let alone touch any of the pedals now flashfoward 28years I'm 30 now, my wife and I have a son that just turned 1 in July, my dad sold that first gen to a family friend years ago who hasn't a clue I'm going to purchase it back from him to build with our son I plan on getting the truck to 650hp is my goal and doing all the paint and bodywork with him tires, wheels, and whatever he wants I plan on intercooling it and p-pumping it with a 215 p7100 pump stainless .093 lines and a he351 cheetah from fleece steed speed or stainless manifold and all kinda little goodies and later in life presenting him with the keys of a vehicle his grandfather, father and mother and now himself can drive and enjoy for years to come he's the 4th generation name sake so sentimental things run thick in our family. sorry for such a long post as there will be many more to come in the thread once the truck is purchased and the build starts. any help and opinions on more efficient ways to make 650 reliably will be greatly appreciated as I want my little man to enjoy years of diesel performance to come to be memorable as possible thanks in advance

Just FYI that turbo might be capable of those numbers on a common rail dyno run, but it won't come close on a 12v.

A good 180 or 215 pump setup properly by a good builder, a good set of 5x016 injectors and a 362 over 475 twin turbo setup will get you there power wise. Drivetrain is a whole different topic and giving a kid that kind of power at first is a disaster waiting to happen. Get a truck and redo it with your child, give it nice interior, nice paint, radio louder than the Cummins. Then after they start driving it build it one step at a time with then to teach them how to drive a power house truck like that. I would just build the very into about 400hp. That is a good running 1st Gen truck as they are the lightest of all Cummins powered Dodges.

i agree with this!

keep the VE pump, add 5x14s, small compounds (hybrid/s472), and a built tranny. make 400hp all day long and be reliable.

and like badbowtie said, make him build it with you! some of my fondest childhood memories are projects with my old man. heck, we still have them as adults. we're just grown ass kids now, hahaha.
 
I plan on building with him along with the help of my wife I'd much rather p-pump for tuning later as power grows as well as a single charger but if I go to compounds I'll go with Garrett's in arrangement just always been a garrett fanatic I figure a gtx 4508r or gtx 4202r over whatever small charger not sure which one yet but still nothing is set in stone as I still have to get the truck back first then as he grows we will build it together
 
Just something to think about a ve pump has variable timing built in, they daily drive nicer than a p pump does especially if it gets cold where you live. My p pump is not fun below freezing, especially if you have a grabby clutch. The getrag that is the factory 5spd in a first gen will not live long behind a built engine either.

I will definetly keep that in mind as I want him to enjoy it rather than not like it doesn't get cold enough around here to gel fuel maybe hit 32 sometime but it's dry cold in winter warms up fairly quick with the sun out I also get up early enough each morning that I let my truck idle for 30min to 1 hour figure Ill do that when later on down the road when he starts driving it cause you know how teens are sleep til the last minute then rush to where it is they are going school work or whatever atleast that's the way most folks around here do it

I personally would pick up a 97/98 complete 215 engine and swap the whole engine in. A very simple set up such as 4-5ks, full cuts, 5x14s and a basic s366 (66/74/14cm) will net you an extremely fun 650hp. We did this on this same set up 5 years ago.

you just sound ignorant. don't mean to offend you, i'm just telling you why it keeps coming up. no one here is grammatically perfect, but punctuation makes reading a post much easier.

this is compd, when people stop giving you crap, thats when you start to worry! lol

if you're set on anything more than 450hp, then you're right, pee pee pump it is. just realize the rest of the truck was built for 160hp, lol.

and DO NOT let your 12v idle for 30 minutes to an hour.
