Freeze Plug Plate (DIY)

i had forgotten about this.. i still have a fullsize template that i can fax to folks if needed.

the next weak link is the freeze plug on the pass side of the block at the rear... luckily that one has 2 bolts around it to help push it in with a plate.....
yep, i found out the hard way, now have an enterprise engine relief kit....

Excellent write up, jlibert. Proud to have you as a member here.

Taking the time to detail write ups like that increases the resource value of CompD for everyone. I applaud your contribution.

Thanks -- I learn more than I can ever contribute here.

I'm almost finished with a twin turbo write up. Working on fastner torque specs.

So where is the next weak link? If it doesn't blow out there, what blows next?

funny you should ask. After 2 years with the rear blocked off, I popped the front one out (behind the fan mount bracket).

Bottom line -- get a bypass installed.

there is a write up on here somewhere about a cheaper bypass kit. i did it on my 215 motor i put in my 01 while i had it apart. I used the rear blockoff plate from pure diesel power and the pop off valve cant remeber were i got it. (like 55 bucks) tapped my t-stat housing and run the hose up there instead of teeing into the upper radiator hose. works great

How much did all that cost you Jp? I am pretty sure EEP makes a kit for the 3rd Gens that is around $100, not that you need it now, your set-up looks great, just seemed like a lot of work. :)
Now you have no reason to not put the hammer down at each and every pull.:rockwoot:

Yeah, buying the kit is the way to go for sure. I needed my truck back up and running quick so I had to make the plate.

I still blew the front plug at the last pull in ceres. Now my thermostat is drilled out and I only see about 160* going down the road which isn't right either. I'm waiting on a pressure relief valve to complete my bypass plumbing.

My rear freeze plug was recessed a little and didn't contact the plate I made for it. So I drilled and tapped a hole in my plate and put a bolt in it that I could run up flush to the center of the freeze plug. That way it couldn't budge from it's factory position in the hole. Not sure it really matters, but it made sense to me!

Why didn't you just put a washer between them?

just a side note do not drill the freeze plug while still in the motor and all it takes to pop out the freeze plug is a punch just tap one of the sides of the freeze plug and it will come lose there realy isnt much room between the plug and the #6 cylinder wall
