I am installing a new front crank seal. I have no instructions and after a search still have questions. I set the seal with the tool how I thought it would be installed. Judging by the red line in my cover. If I install it from the front using the tool it will position the seal back where the old one was. Is this the correct way? Also how does the plastic insert come out? Will the seal expand enough to slip over the large end and collapse back down on the crank? There is also a small groove in the crank. Thats sucks because my truck doesnt even have 100,000 miles on it yet.

You have it right, just make sure the new seal moves to a different part on the crank. The plastic part just pulls out after the cover is on.

Ok good. I can just drive the seal in a little farther than before. I might need an extension for the installation tool.

It's a major pain in the ass. Warpig did mine yesterday after my cam install and it was no fun. It has to be perfect or you end up rolling the edge of the seal over and ruining the seal. Between Warpig and Frank Noble ( Noble HP on here), they had no problem, I would have destroyed it. I don't have the patience, probably why I am not a wrench for a living.LOL

Well I got the seal in the cover. Its much easier to do from the inside of the cover. The large radius in the cover makes it easier to put in straight. I turned and bored a piece of steel tubing to press on the seal. We will see how the cover instalation goes in the morning.

Everything went together great. Im feeling pretty good about this. I should have the rest of the engine back together soon, and then I will check for a leak.

Well as my normal luck goes. The new seal is leaking. Im thinking about getting the seal and sleeve kit.

Sucks bud.... Find you a hydraulic supply house that retails SKF Speedi Sleeves, grab your calipers and get a good average o.d. of the crank then have them order you one, they are great and they are removable and replaceable. Get the gold version though, they are tougher, use them on equipment and no problems usually. I had to do this for the rear main that kept leaking because of grooving in the crank on my 02.

I usually take the red paint off with a wire wheel and it makes it easier to install from the front of the timing cover. Be sure to save that platic install sleeve incase you end taking the cover on and off a few times. Saves you from buying a new seal everytime.$.02

Does Cummins sell a sleeve and seal kit? Do I need a seal with a bigger I.D. when using a speedi sleeve? I am assuming this seal is junk now that its leaking.

Ok, thanks for the help. I wonder if I should buy a new seal now. Im getting sick of pulling the front cover.

Yeah absolutely, you will have to to get that speedi sleeve on there... Sucks, especially with these high temperatures.

Well I removed my balancer this morning to measure the crank for a sleeve. Much to my surprise The seal was dry. No oil coming from it at all. It looks as though it s coming from the bottom of the cover. I must not have put enough RTV Black on the bottom between the two cover bolts. Its not a big deal except I dont think I have the plastic installation tool that came with the seal any more. Is it possible to get the cover on without that pastic insert?

Good to hear! Well to get it off is easy as you know, but back on without the installer you have to hold your mouth just right, and you risk tearing that seal up... I'd definitely go root through the trash barrel in the shop or something and see if i could find that install sleeve.

It will be a PITA if you dont have one. Ive tried it before without, and it leaked because I creased the seal... now I keep spares in my toolbox.

I will dig some more. I would hate to get the cover sealed up but then have the crank seal leak. If I cant find it then I guess I will just keep my finger crossed.

subscribing.. im on my 2nd seal, and it still leaks like crazy! im going to try a speedy sleeve and see if that helps my issue..
