I was in some mud in my 97 4x4 that has 185000 on it and I put in 4 wheel drive and my front drive shaft was spinning but the wheels where not. What exactly is the problem and what should I do to fix it. It drives fine in 2 wd

any clunking or grinding? are all your vacuum lines hooked up and in good shape? give us a little more info please

Check to see if the vacuum disconnect is working. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the unit into the front axle. Have someone start up the truck and put the 4wd selector in and out of 4x4. The shift fork should move side to side, which engages/disengages the shift collar on the axle shaft.

There is no grinding abut how exactilly would I check the vaccine lines and vaccine disconnect are good or not

Any ideas, my buddy got stuck in some mud today and I couldn't een be if much help to him

Well I'm sorry that my spell check corrected whatever I typed to vaccine rather than vacuum. And I understand I need to look at the lines but I don't know what I'm looking for or where they are located and how should I check the actuator

Not to be a jerk...

If you don't know what a vacuum line is, and how to pull one off and see if it's pulling a vacuum and if it's not trace it back and find the hole, this may not be the place for you.

The problem you are having is very common and basic, and this isn't the place for hand holding with basic tech issues...

I completely see your point but I do understand what a vacuum line is but was just wanting to have help finding these lines. If this is a forum it should be a community where people can answer others questions to learn more about the subject matter

I'll bet that if you got off your computer and crawled under the truck and looked at the front axle on the passenger side for 1 minute, you'll quickly see the vacuum lines, actuator, or any other problem that would cause your 4x4 to not engage.

Then again, you could probably post this question on 3 different forums and after a week or two someone will post a few pictures of the vacuum lines and you'll still have to crawl under the truck to inspect them.

If you can't figure it out after crawling under your truck and looking, then come back and post a question I will personally help you. Until then, get off your duff and find the problem.

^^ This!!

No kidding though, its common sense. Its not that difficult to figure out! I think a lot of people have lost this, or dont have any at all.

And just to help you out there should be two vacuum lines. At least if I remember correctly. LOL

I dont have them on my truck anymore because of all of the problems with the vacuum actuator. Ive got the locker cable.

All that was necessary to say was on the passenger side of the truch and then told. Me how to check them to see if they are all good and could explain more about this locker cable?
