Each cylinder of a diesel engine always draws in the maximum amount of air on the intake stroke. Engine speed is determined by controlling the amount of diesel fuel that is injected into the cylinder. At lower engine speeds, a small amount of fuel is added to the air in the cylinder, while at higher speeds, more fuel is added to the same amount of air resulting in an increased combustion event to produce more power.
Note that the same amount of air is present in the cylinder. It’s the diesel fuel that varies to determine engine speed. Whatever air that does not get burned in the combustion process is simply pushed out on the exhaust stroke. This is where the Superchips DPI system comes in to play.
