One problem that crops up with a wearing VP44 is it loses its ability to advance timing readily which of course causes MPG to deteriorate.
In the winter you have everything working against you: less BTU per gallon of fuel, greater temperature differential between ambient and operating temp which means more miles to heat up, colder air carrying that heat away, and stiffer drivetrain components due to cold lubricants.
