My friend has a 2012 with 20,000 miles on it. Bone stock, tows a 5k lb boat. This weekend he went fishing and had the guy he took fishing pull his boat out of the water and he apparently mistook 3rd for 1st and got the clutch hot enough that smelled pretty bad and now is slipping. I'd think it isn't worn out, just got hot enough to cause problems. Is it shot or will it return to normal?

That clutch / flywheel isn't know for being excessively stout. Mine started slipping with stock power and no load at 36K on the clock. Upgrade to a solid flywheel with a good clutch and be done with it. FYI, do some research on what to expect out of a G56 with a solid flywheel. The trans is LOUD and takes some getting used to. Dual mass flywheels behave differently than stockers.
