Youre fortunate you did not get alot more hassle. These guys are brutal when it comes to making a truck just smoke. Not only that but there have been 3-4 threads on here in the last month or so about the best programmer.
As far as the original question it is better to spend $800 plus now, than alot more later. IMO Smarty is the best programmer for the money
