when coming to a stop i hear a "grinding/rubbing" noise and there is a vibration that seems to shake the cab a little - sounds and feels like its coming from the front end but who knows. usually starts around 10mph and is there until i come to a complete stop. its not noticable when taking off from a stop, only when slowing down. also, it doesnt SEEM to be brake related b/c if i roll to a stop, i get the same noise/vibration. however, when brakes are applied it vibrates a little harder and louder. any ideas??

I've got something very similar in mine that just started. It only does it when the truck has been sitting for a while. After a couple of miles it goes away. I'm thinking wheel bearing considering the passenger one has 153k on it.

hmm well mine just started within the last couple weeks and it stays around the entire time i drive...

check out the wheel bearings...if your ABS light comes on pull over, your hub assembly is going out...ask me how I know. :bang

Found mine out. Turns out that somehow dad and I managed to install the right rear brake pads backwards so that the metal backing was facing the rotor. Took it a month before they started grinding. So now I get to change out a rotor and brake pad.

yikes!! thats not good haha :bang

Jack up the front end one side at a time and roll the tires over by hand, you should be able to hear it if a bearing is going south. While you have it up use a long prybar or piece of lumber to pry upwards on the tire to check for slack. You can also grab the tire at top and bottom and try to move it back and forth, there should be 0 slack in that direction.

what about play in the rear pinion or a bad seal?? it was mentioned in another forum

Worth checking out as well, while you are under there look real hard at the T case as well, grab the front driveshaft and start pulling and twisting on it, look everything over that turns.

It could be your downpipe vibrating against your bellhousing or frame... I had that happen before and would only do it when almost stopped, as I slowed to a stop the TQ converter would load the engine, torquing it sidways causing to vibrate against the bellhousing.

i have been messing with the new hx-40 style downpipe and exhuast lately...ill look into that as well. i just cant see the exhuast vibrating the cab that bad..who knows tho, its worth taking a look at.

it may not be but its worth checking... my vibration was BAD! different downpipe and everything was smooth.

Keep in mind when checking the wheel bearings like Billy told you to that they will not always make noise when the load is taken off of them.

what do u look for then???

heres what i found out:

no play in tires / driveshaft / rear pinion / calipers and rotors dont look too good but i dont see why the rotors would cause it b/c the vibration/grinding still exists when i roll to a stop without touching the brakes

i also noticed the past two times i have driven in the rain or on wet pavement, the grinding/vibration goes away...

wtf is up??

What kind of tires do you have on the truck? I had Maxxis Buckshot Mudders and thats what it looks what u might have from ur Avatar. Any way i had them on my truck and the last half of the tires life they wear very uneven and the create like a rumble strip feeling when so u slow down especially under ten miles an hour. When u run ur hands over them u can see that they have a wear pattern that is not even in any direction. I know it wasnt alignment and obviously its not the easy for every one to balance larger tires. As the condition of the tire got worse so did the noise and vibration. When i put new tires on it all went away.... Just my $.02

Warped Rotors. If they are hot from a lot of braking and then you hit a cool puddle of water it could cause them to warp. I had a set warrentied on my '99 truck at the 10K mark. You could only feel it when braking. The slower you go the worse it shook. I'd place $.02 it is one or both of your rotors. I got into a cussing match with them becuase they warrantied the rotors but charges me $200+ for the brake job. I was mad, mad, mad.
