Hand throttle...who runs one and why?

I noticed a few more of the super street style trucks going to hand throttles, what is the reason?

I know on a 6k rpm engine it gives you a better feel for the motor and you can let out a little if needed, but on a 4k rpm, "street truck" is there a need for one?

I can fab one up and have it working in my truck in about 2 hours probably, and it would be easily removable for when I drive on the street but I just don't think I need it.

I think thats just for hopped up p pumps that spin alot of RPM cause the throttles are so touchy, cant really see one on a vp44. / You coming over this weekend?

It is cause the throttles are so touchy. Picture getting to bouncing and then your in and out of the throttle. The hand throttle has lots of travel instead of the 3 inches of the foot throttle.

I don't know, I haven't added anything to the truck, and I'm trying to save as much cash as possible to get my truck done before April...but if I can hitch a ride with someone I might come down.

Gotta talk to my 12v buddies...2 of them might be interested in some tuning

Ahh...I had that happen, got to bouncing and when I tried to let out a little...I bounced right off the pedal...got back in it and luckily got it lit again and still pulled 303'

Some people use a strap around the pedal to hold the foot in place. Lots of places hand throttles are illegal.

It is genraly used on nippo pumps and such to control throttle movement and when you run high governers it will (the governer)fight back at you when you get up in the high rpms and a foot throttle doesnt have the leverage to hold the pump wide open.

sounds wild...I wan't one

I bet II new 14mm pump is a riot

Most street classes do not allow hand throttles... unless you are a paraplegic.

I run modified at my local pulls and they dont have any rules against it, plus it would be something that is easily installed/removed depending on which way I had to run for a particular event/class

Having a manual it would give your right foot an easier time :) Also, i had the CC out for that Fluiddampner....

a hand throttle pump is only going to be good on a rsv conversion pump which you remove the govenor on the back of the p pump and which takes some where up to 20% of the engines power to spin you could do it on a regular one but no great benifit would be seen power wise hand throttles are for a direct linkage to the rack and alot of rpms to run down the track hope this helps

The RSV governor arm can hardly be moved by hand, the extra leverage of the hand throttle is needed.

Try driving on the road with a hand throttle and a 5 spd....it takes a lot of skills to pull that off. Ya burnouts are easier

IKE

I never said I was gonna drive it on the street...it would be a set-up that I could pop the handle in with a pin, and hook the cable up and use it, or take it out and drive it normally in a matter of seconds.

ah heck, I say go for it. if for nothing else, you'd at least be able to pretend like you were a mod class puller while you pulled street. :D

Hence why I asked if there was any reason for it, seems there is no reason for it without a very high rpm pump.

Hand throttles are nice, if you need one. Everyones comments are right on point, the stiff throttle arm of the RSV governer, the control you have over the rpm range with alot of "throw". I love mine, plus it makes for a clutter free pump area in the engine compartment.
