OK, it blew right under the t-stat housing. I was told thats the weakest point... ? Only coolant is leaking, no coolant in oil or oil in coolant, just some white smoke.
Well Im wondering whats all involved in pulling the head? What all must be removed prior to removal?
I dont have studs installed yet but have a set to install when i reinstall the head. Also was planing on a 12v marine gasket .20 ? or .10?
I know i need to get it decked, but how much should that cost?
Im not doing o ring's. but have thought about porting and heavier springs.
What kind of $$$$$ am i looking at?

well one think i ran into when pulling my head was the back push rods and head bolts. there are rubber grommets in the top of the fire wall/cowl so you can slide them up there to get them out. just a heads up, took me forever to figure it out.

you can have the head off in about 20 min aint nothing to it..just take the manifold bolts out and the manifold ,turbo ,and all will move just enough so you can pull the head

yes you have to take all that stuff off...there is a sensor on the back of the head on the right side you need to unplug also..

Ive read that the coolant leak could be a blown oring in the water pump? i cant see where its coming from, just what is getting wet... everything up front!

Drain the coolant and pull the upper coolant hose, take the belt loose and take the upper alternator mounting bolt out, pull the intake and TPS mounting bracket off, injection lines, unplug both sensors on the drivers side of the head, take the fuel return line off the back side of the head, pull the exhaust manifold off, pull the valve cover and all the valvetrain and push tubs, remove the head bolts and pull it out. If your not going to pull the injectors before you pull the head out be very careful not to smash a tip.
I might be forgetting somethng but that should get you started.

If I were you Id just replace the water pump first before going through the hassel of pulling the head. The water pump takes only a couple minutes and is somewhat cheap. Thats what happened to mine last year and thought it was the HG. Now this year I blew the HG and seems that when they let go on the passenger front corner it tends to be oil not antifreeze. Then again Im no expert but, just my$.02. Good luck:Cheer:

i just got done f'n with it. Took the blow gun and blew everything off and rolled a rag up a stuffed it under the front side of the head, ran the truck to operating temp and there was still coolant blowing everywhere, looks to be coming from the pump pulley itself. turned the truck off and checked the rag, dry! Butt hell, Talked to John this morn, he said to deck and flux, 12v gasket, and his springs, $700. might be worth takin the head off anyways! lol

Got her fixed. New napa pump, looks JUST like a cummins piece.
But it'll get tore down this winter for a head job.
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

When you do the head, contact member "Snedge" on here for the 12v gasket. He will punch the holes you need to make it line up for your 24v.

Personally, if I had the head off again I wouldn't go .020 over. I'd leave it stock (or maybe .010 over if they offer it, but I don't think they do). I notice a little reduction in the bottom end and more smoke.. Not what I want in a DD. It isn't enough that I would tear out the .020 and go back because of it, but if I knew now what I didn't know then, I'd have stuck a stocker in it.

Just my 2c.

i went .010 over..... noticed the same thing.

i'm happy with it though....

.020 is like droppin 1 point of compression i beleive

When mine blew at the front right corner it was antifreeze.
Glad it was just the pump
