Been looking around and finding lots of 6.4 SD's in the 200 to 300, 000 mile range with bad motors. What should a person look for on these trucks as for the bad points on them that wear. I'm really looking for one with no gooseneck ball and in the 125 to 150 range but those in the 200's really don't look to bad if they've been used like a car.

One bad point to look for is if the 6.4 is still under the hood.

One very good thing is if that 6.4 doesn't look like all of these Cummins 5.9 and 6.7s pictured below. LOL

Point me to where I have ever said the 6.4 was "good"? :hehe:

Pics!
Pic #1 is a 6.4 that had a minor incident (seen MUCH worse), it lost a piston and the rod punched out a gopher hole.
Pic #2 is probably the 5th or 6th crank from a Cummins I have had that was broken, not to mention the ones I have had with chewed up pistons, cylinder heads and cylinders from dropped seats and/or valves.

I'd just as soon they still have everything under the hood intact so all the sensors and wires are there. Nothing did the 12 valves in but the government, I stay away from anything you can't start with a piece of wire and screwdriver these days.

In my fairly limited experience with the 6.4 trucks its pretty standard wear stuff besides the motor. The rest of them is pretty solid, a friend of mine sold a 10 a few years ago with 315k and it still had the original shocks on it. I drove it to the new guys house and it still drove really nice.

Are the front ends in 4 wheel drives better than the junk in the second gen dodges?

Is there any kind of market for a running 6.4? I myself can't imagine spending anything on one of them with as many problems as they cause. Wouldn't mind buying a running low mile one if the motor had enough value to justify it.

Last core value I saw on a 6.4, no windows, salvageable block/crank, was $750-$2000.

How does the 6.7 scorpion compare? Is it a solid engine?

Early ones dropped valves, turbo's didn't last, and they'd toss injectors after the CP4 ate the cam lobes and sent that chrome through the system.

Honestly though, most is fixed and even the early ones aren't bad if comparing them to a 6.0 or 6.4. If you got a 2014+ under 200k, and swapped the CP4, it'd probably run another 200k. :Cheer:

Tie rod ends, ball joints etc are literally double the size of secons gens. I was amazed when I saw the front end under mine for the first time. I think the weakest point is the rear ends. Hopefully 2 or 3 more months and I'll have mh shop finished enough to where I can start on fummins swapping mine.

I've had 4, still have two.

Replaced a turbo on the 13 at 155k miles.

Cracked a piston in the 18 at 53k miles.

I hope the piston was a fluke because I just brought home a 2020.

We have 7 6.7’s at work with model years from 2011-2019. We have had very little issues out of them, only small issues; no turbos, injectors, or major hard parts. Biggest problems we have had are emission system issues (which isn’t the engine’s fault). They are all bone stock trucks.

We have one 6.4 right now. It has had a decent amount of work done, although the engine has never been opened up. It will be sold next year, I’m hoping she stays together! It is a bone stock truck as well.
